One common concern among adults is whether learning to swim at this age is too late. Many believe that swimming should be learned from a young age, as it becomes more difficult to learn as one gets older. In reality, there is a significant demand for swimming lessons among adults, but many hesitate due to shyness about learning alongside children, insecurities about their appearance, or difficulty finding age-appropriate classes.
Ms. Do Thu Hien (born in 1989), residing in Phan Dinh Phung ward, initially felt that way when she enrolled in an adult swimming course. During the first few lessons, she lacked confidence practicing basic techniques while many younger students were already proficient swimmers. However, determined to overcome her childhood fear of water, she persevered and can now swim using basic techniques.
Ms. Hien shared: “Before, I always thought that because I was older, it would be difficult for me to learn to swim. But when I took my child to swimming lessons and saw her gradually become more confident in the water, I decided to give it a try. After the course, I not only learned to swim but also felt more confident participating in water activities.”
Not only in urban areas, but the demand for swimming lessons among adults is also increasing in rural localities. In Lam Vy commune, the swimming class led by Mr. Vu Van Tuan, a physical education teacher at Lam Vy Primary School, regularly attracts many students aged 35 to over 40.
According to Mr. Tuan, the biggest difficulty for adults is not their ability to learn, but rather their fear of water and lack of physical flexibility. In addition, many people have learned to swim based on experience, resulting in incorrect techniques that require time to correct.
However, adults have an advantage in their ability to perceive and absorb knowledge systematically. Once they overcome the initial psychological barrier, the process of learning to swim usually happens quite quickly. The important thing is to receive proper instruction and practice regularly.
Tran Thi Duyen (born in 1990), from Lam Vy commune, a student in Mr. Tuan's class, said that the most difficult thing for her was not the arm and leg movements, but the underwater breathing technique. Many people think breathing while swimming is very simple, but in reality, this is a skill that determines the ability to conserve energy and handle situations underwater.
According to instructors, knowing how to swim is not just about floating or moving in the water, but also about mastering breathing techniques, handling emergencies, and safety principles. These are crucial factors in reducing the risk of drowning and improving self-protection.
For every adult, knowing how to swim not only adds another sport to improve health but also equips them with an important skill to protect themselves and assist others in emergency situations. It's never too late to learn to swim. More importantly, it's not just a sport but also an essential life skill for everyone in modern life.
