According to 8news , these clocks were installed in the women's restroom in the Yungang Cave, Datong City, where there are many ancient temples.

In the shared video , there is a large LED screen above each stall. The blue screen is the stall is empty. When someone uses it, the screen turns red and a timer appears.

Speaking to China's Sing Tao Times , a tourist said there was another screen showing a diagram of the restroom, using red and green to indicate whether the stalls were occupied or not.

“I think these devices are very advanced and will prevent people from waiting or knocking randomly,” she said. “But I also feel a little uncomfortable, as if I am being watched.”

This integrated clock display system has received a lot of negative feedback.

"This has never happened before... Would anyone sit in a public toilet at a tourist spot just to play with their phone? How was the budget for this project approved? What a waste," one user commented, according to 8world .

Another commented: "What's the problem if someone takes longer to use the toilet if they're unwell? Do they deserve to be publicly shamed?"

Responding to questions from Chinese media, a representative of the Yungang Cave Management Board explained that there is no time regulation to "control" users in the toilet.

"This installation is not intended to chase away customers or limit time, but only to let users know how long they are in the restroom," the representative said.

Another employee said the installation of the timer was to accommodate the increasing number of visitors, Star Video reported.

Public feedback will be relayed to management. Therefore, the display can be adjusted to only show whether people are present or not and eliminate the timer.
