School plays touch the emotions of students.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, in coordination with the People's Committee of Ba Ria Ward, recently organized a theatrical program on preventing domestic violence and school violence at two schools in the area: Nguyen Du Secondary School and Phuoc Nguyen Secondary School. The program generated enthusiasm among teachers and students.

Family and school stories

In addition to cheerful and youthful musical performances such as "Home is Where," "Beloved Teachers," and "Our Family," the most anticipated act was the short play "Things Not Said" (script and direction by Quoc Hung).

Students from Phuoc Nguyen Secondary School, Ba Ria Ward, answer multiple-choice questions about preventing domestic violence and school violence.

The play revolves around the family relationships of two middle school students, Nam and Minh. At Minh's house, his father, recently unemployed, becomes depressed and turns to alcohol, venting his anger on his wife and son. Every day, Minh suffers beatings, yelling, and acts of violence that inflict physical and mental harm. His father's aggression and violence gradually infect Minh. Nam, on the other hand, is in a difficult situation. His parents are divorced, and no one cares about the psychological well-being of a teenager going through puberty, leaving him feeling lonely and isolated. This leads to the development of a weak personality and an inability to handle social situations.

Bringing psychological trauma to school, Minh used violence to intimidate weaker students. The story culminated when Minh and his group of friends ganged up on Nam. The incident was discovered and stopped by the teacher, who then invited the parents to the school to discuss and find solutions to end the problem of school violence.

The performances at Nguyen Du Secondary School and Phuoc Nguyen Secondary School are part of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee's initiative to bring literature and art to the people, organized by the Department of Culture and Sports. The performances in this series aim to respond to the National Action Month on preventing and combating domestic violence and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Vietnamese Family Day (June 28, 2001 - June 28, 2026).

The play's relatable storyline, realistically reflecting the interactions of family members and students at school, captivated the young audience. The applause and excited chatter during each scene demonstrated the children's interest, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of the play's content.

Mr. Nghiem Xuan Chau, Principal of Phuoc Nguyen Secondary School, shared: “This is the first time the students have seen a theatrical performance closely related to their own lives, so they are very excited. The short play provided students and teachers with useful knowledge and skills on how to behave and resolve situations related to preventing domestic and school violence… It also helped guide them in thinking appropriately for their age and making the right choices in life. The school hopes to have more similar programs with different content performed at the school in the future.”

Conveying positive values.

According to psychological experts, family and school are two core environments for preventing violence at its root. It is in these environments, if properly taught, that students can identify risks early, learn to respect themselves, protect their peers, and build a civilized lifestyle. With the right skills and awareness, they will become positive contributors, spreading messages of love and building a safe and healthy living environment.

As the unit tasked with organizing the performances in this series, Mr. Le Duc Phap, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Culture and Exhibition Center, said: “Through these performances, we want to convey to the students the noble values of family affection; the love, help, and support for each other's development at school. Due to the specific characteristics of the audience being teenagers (from 11 to 15 years old), psychological development greatly influences their thinking and life views, so the performances need to be designed in a way that is easy for them to understand and absorb, avoiding dogmatic content. Because of the program's effectiveness, many localities have continuously registered for performances. We hope that in the future, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports will increase the number of performances to meet the actual needs of the localities.”

Beyond laughter and touching moments, school stages also demonstrate the power of art in touching students' emotions. Each performance contributes to sowing seeds of compassion and building a safe and civilized school and family environment.
