Discipline and commitment

In recent years, the scale of training at universities has continuously increased due to strong investment in teaching and learning facilities. As a result, some universities have enrollment quotas reaching tens of thousands of students annually. However, a significant number of graduates also drop out.

It can be seen that the percentage of students graduating on time is mostly very low. In some schools, only 37-38 out of 100 students graduate on time, or at best, around 40-60. Very few schools have a rate above 80%.

According to regulations, the maximum time for students to complete a course should not exceed twice the standard study plan duration for each type of training at a higher education institution. If the training program is 4 years, students are allowed a maximum of 8 years to complete it. However, after 6 years, the graduation rate at many schools is still only 60-80%, and in some schools it is only 40-50%. Even after the maximum 8 years, many students still cannot graduate.

The main reason for this situation is the lack of time management skills and the inability to plan for studying and resting. Students also tend to have a superficial approach to learning, studying just to pass courses rather than to understand them. They are lazy about accumulating credits early on, only "sprinting" in their final year and losing direction, not knowing why they are studying.

Next is the learning environment and school support. Some training programs are heavily theoretical, lacking practical application and flexibility in course scheduling. The lack of personalized academic counseling for weak or slow-learning students, and the low level of self-study among students are also contributing factors.

The causes also stem from external factors such as financial pressure forcing students to work extra jobs; the temptations of social media; or a lack of balance between studying, working, living, and dating…

To improve the on-time graduation rate, the solution lies not only in grades but also in building a more realistic personal development plan.

The school needs to design a more flexible curriculum, allowing for early enrollment, accelerated learning, or parallel online learning… It should strengthen academic advising and enhance the early warning system for students at risk of falling behind. Next, it needs to create a school culture that encourages students to be proactive, share, and support each other.

For students, the following should be done: First, build a personal study plan from the first year. Second, determine how many credits to take each semester and which courses to start early. Third, create a clear plan for studying, part-time work, and leisure time. Fourth, find a mentor or study partner; a knowledgeable person or a good study group can take you very far. Next, proactively learn more soft skills and career orientation. When students understand what goals they are studying to achieve, they are less likely to go astray.

Don't let your four years of university pass by in uncertainty. Remember, your first year is for orientation, learning how to study, how to live, and how to work in a team. Your second year is for experimentation; join clubs, work part-time, gain practical experience... but don't neglect your studies. Your third year is for accelerating your professional development and beginning to shape your career path. Your fourth year is for breakthroughs, preparing projects, theses, job applications, and interview skills…

University is not a short race, but a long journey that requires discipline and belief. Graduating on time not only earns you a degree, but also means keeping your commitment to yourself.
