Sudan has made history in African football. |
According to Stats Foot, Sudan became the first team in AFCON history to advance from the group stage without scoring a single goal. A strange record, but enough to etch the "Desert Eagles" into the tournament's history books.
In Group E, Sudan finished the group stage with 3 points and third place overall. Above them were Algeria, with a perfect record to lead the group, and Burkina Faso, who earned 6 points to finish second. Given the tournament format, third place was enough for Sudan to continue their journey at AFCON 2025.
Sudan's only victory came in their second match, against Equatorial Guinea. The game ended 1-0 in favor of Sudan, but the decisive goal didn't come from a Sudanese player. In the 74th minute, Equatorial Guinea's central defender Saul Coco, in an attempt to clear the ball, inadvertently scored an own goal, gifting Sudan the only goal of the match.
That rare own goal opened the door to history for Sudan. They won their first African Cup of Nations victory in 13 years and secured their place in the knockout round. All of this was achieved without a single goal from their strikers.
