Is becoming wealthy something to be admired?

Việt NamViệt Nam26/10/2023

On Vietnamese Entrepreneurs' Day, October 13th, real estate group N. organized a three-day retreat in Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province, for its Group 1 clients, including several economic and financial experts and journalists. The retreat combined with a mini-seminar titled "Making Money Remarkably." The loyal guests gathered for the retreat, and with the alcohol flowing, conversation flowed freely, and many heartfelt opinions were expressed.

- In Vietnam, who are the biggest billionaires, the incredibly wealthy, the most respected? On the sidelines of the panel discussion, the communications director of Group N. raised this point for debate.

- Wow, so there's a concept of "making money that's respectable" and "making money that's not"? Reporter K. countered.

Experts, journalists, and managers took turns expressing their views on how to get rich—how to achieve wealth through admirable means versus how to accumulate wealth through opportunistic and unscrupulous means. The experts then outlined and selected the names of billionaires rich in stocks, land, and bank deposits. Without naming anyone specifically, everyone could guess the existence of billionaires A, B, and C. The discussion was lively when suddenly a banking tycoon raised a question, seemingly concluding the conversation:

- What's the point of wealthy tycoons and entrepreneurs who become rich through cronyism and illicit profits from powerful government officials, getting rich like a kite in the wind from thousands of hectares of prime land, getting rich from land – snatching up prime land as if robbing, defrauding people through prime land projects, from stocks and securities? What's so respectable about getting rich this way?!

The story of getting rich from land is quite lively, with successes and failures, worthy of respect and contempt. Many stories "hidden behind a gray curtain" are revealed without any prior investigation. The chairman of a friendly corporation, a business expert in science and technology, an intellectual who lives and works honestly, and seriously studies current affairs, recently returned from Japan. He informed about the Vietnam Intellectuals Forum in Japan 2023, held on October 15, 2023, at the University of Tokyo, organized by the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan, discussing "Making Money Honestly," raising many thought-provoking points with the theme "Following the Current Towards the Future." The Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan, former Minister of Planning and Investment of Vietnam, Vo Hong Phuc, along with many prominent Japanese and Vietnamese officials and intellectuals in Japan, attended, participated in discussions, and shared their views on "Connecting Human Knowledge" and "Vietnamese Intelligence Enriching the Vietnamese Nation."

At the forum, a Vietnamese intellectual enterprise in Japan, called Rikkei, was recognized and appreciated. It's worth remembering that six students from Hanoi University of Technology went to Japan for advanced IT training, sponsored by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). In 2012, after graduating, all six Vietnamese men stayed in Japan to start their own business, establishing Rikkei. Starting from scratch – no office location, no capital, no staff, no finances – they ate and slept rough at train stations, bus terminals, and under staircases. Yet, in just over 10 years, Rikkei overcame difficulties, striving from nothing to something, specializing in research, application, and business in the rapidly developing IT technology sector. Now, Rikkei has established branches in Vietnam, the United States, and Thailand, and will soon open a branch in South Korea.

The retreat and mini-talk on Vietnamese Entrepreneurs' Day at the Phan Thiet beach resort in Binh Thuan province was truly meaningful. The speakers shared insights into Rikkei's ethical business practices, the aspirations of young, intellectually gifted individuals mastering advanced technology, and their commitment to their homeland, bringing human knowledge back to Vietnam. It's truly admirable to see these young Vietnamese intellectuals, their entrepreneurial spirit, and their remarkable wealth creation. These billionaires don't target land, they don't engage in deception, and they don't exploit loopholes in the system—a form of wealth accumulation that is unworthy of respect!
