Getting rich by exploiting advantages.

Exploiting potential and advantages, developing agriculture towards sustainable commodity production; focusing on improving the quality of mắc khén fruit to meet OCOP 3-star product standards; building and developing the green-necked duck breed as a key product..., these are some of the stories we heard frequently when visiting Mường É commune in early 2026.

Farmers in Muong E commune are harvesting coffee.

Accompanying us to Lap village – one of the areas with a large area of mac khen trees in the commune – Mr. Lo Anh Vien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong E commune, shared: Implementing the two-tiered local government model, Muong E commune was established on the basis of merging Phong Lap commune and the old Muong E commune. To concretize the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term on developing some agricultural products with potential and unique advantages of the locality towards commodity production and OCOP products, the commune has mobilized the people to continue maintaining and expanding the area of mac khen trees. Making mac khen a characteristic product, linked with building OCOP products, is also one of the breakthroughs that the Muong E Commune Party Committee has chosen to direct in building the local agricultural product brand.

Currently, Muong E commune has over 30 hectares of mắc khén trees, planted in the villages of Mau Xa, Ta Tu, Na Khoang, Mau Thai, Pa Sang, and Lap. According to locals, mắc khén can yield three times the profit of other food crops. The average yield is about 20 tons of fruit per year, selling at an average price of 30-50 thousand VND/kg.

In 2022, the commune promoted and encouraged households to form the Phong Lap Agricultural Cooperative. Alongside the cooperative, specialized agencies supported the construction of a production workshop and provided guidance on designing packaging for the mac khen fruit product. Mr. Luong Van Trong, Director of the Phong Lap Agricultural Cooperative in Muong E commune, said: "Every year, the cooperative harvests 8 to 9 tons of mac khen fruit, selling it at around 50,000 VND/kg. The product is known to people in many localities nationwide for its high quality and delicious flavor. We are continuing to apply techniques to production, improve the quality of OCOP products, expand the market, and increase income for members and mac khen growers."

Artisans in Lua village, Muong E commune, teach the traditional craft of rattan and bamboo weaving to the younger generation.

Furthermore, to further develop the brand of Phong Lap's mac khen (a type of spice), the commune regularly displays mac khen fruit at booths in provincial and national fairs, such as Hanoi and Quang Ninh; it also includes mac khen in the OCOP (One Commune One Product) program, creating an initial foundation for building a sustainable mac khen raw material area, aiming to provide sustainable employment for local workers.

Along with mắc khén (a type of spice), raising green-necked ducks has also been identified as a key product of Mường É commune. The commune is coordinating with the Department of Science and Technology to preserve the genetic resources of this duck breed. The advantages of Mường É green-necked ducks include better natural disease resistance compared to super-meat and super-egg ducks, and a high survival rate under semi-free-range conditions. The duck eggs have large, fragrant yolks and are rich in nutrients. Speaking about raising green-necked ducks, Ms. Lò Thị Dâng from Chiềng Ve village, Mường É commune, said: "Since 2021, my family has developed a model of raising green-necked ducks. Green-necked ducks have small bones, firm, fragrant, and delicious meat, so they are very popular with consumers. Each year, my family raises about 200 green-necked ducks, selling 3-4 batches per year, earning about 40-50 million VND per year."

In addition to the aforementioned key products, Muong E commune is currently developing its agricultural production potential, building production, processing, and consumption chains for industrial crops such as coffee, tea, and macadamia nuts. These crops are receiving in-depth investment, linked to expanding markets and improving economic efficiency. Farmers in the commune are focusing on cultivating over 400 hectares of tea and over 625 hectares of coffee. Notably, Muong E also aims to promote the valuable traditional culture of the ethnic groups in the commune, focusing on traditional crafts such as brocade weaving and basketry, producing items like woven trays, serving trays, fishing nets, baskets, and containers for agricultural products used in the fields.

By harnessing the true potential and strengths of the local area, Muong E is gradually forming concentrated and sustainable commodity production zones. Products such as mac khen (a type of spice) and green-necked duck are helping people alleviate poverty, affirming the commune's correct direction in building agricultural product brands, and creating momentum for a highland rural area to innovate and become rich in identity.
