The document notes: "STEM education is an educational approach aimed at equipping students with scientific knowledge linked to practical applications. From the 2024-2025 school year, there will be three forms of STEM teaching in junior and senior high schools in the city, including: Teaching science subjects through STEM lessons; Organizing STEM experiential activities; Organizing scientific and technical research activities. Teachers will design STEM lessons to implement in the teaching of subjects in the 2018 General Education Program using an integrated approach within subjects or across subjects."
Students present their products during a teaching demonstration in the literature subject, following the STEM education approach.
Following this guidance from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, many teachers enthusiastically created impressive lessons using the STEM education method. This included Literature, a subject considered the most difficult to incorporate STEM elements into.
Recently, Mr. Tran Ngoc Tuan and Mr. Lai Phat Tai (Literature teachers at Tay Thanh High School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City) conducted a demonstration lesson based on the STEM education approach, leaving a lasting impression on both teachers and students. The lesson integrated various activities, including: presenting research findings; and presenting STEM products (informational texts on the topic of Vietnamese cultural heritage).
Teacher Tran Ngoc Tuan stated: "The goal of this lesson is to help students understand the characteristics of informational texts and apply their knowledge to create a text related to a STEM product with practical applications in daily life. In addition, students will learn to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge (computer science, art, physics, culture, medicine, psychology, etc.) in their literature studies. Through this lesson, students will develop a greater love for and awareness of preserving the beauty of our national cultural heritage."
An interesting and creative literature lesson.
The presentation was divided into several activities, combining theatrical performances with STEM product presentations, such as: a report on the Hue Imperial City, combined with presentations of a Vietnamese heritage guidebook, 3D greeting cards about Vietnamese heritage, and a model of the One Pillar Pagoda; presentations of desk calendars, four-panel wall calendars, and drawing books for children about the beauty of Vietnamese culture; and a presentation on the research topic "The Impact of Bad and Good News"... Teachers and students were also delighted by the "Vietnamese Shark Tank Game" performance, which combined the introduction of STEM products such as Dong Ho folk paintings through everyday items like conical hats, school notebooks, keychains, lucky money envelopes, and handbags.
Ms. Phan Thi Tam, Vice Principal of Tay Thanh High School, commented: "The teachers delivered a very interesting and creative literature lesson, with many meaningful products..."
