After working for six years at the former Kien Giang Provincial Youth Activities Center with a stable income, Huynh Minh Phung, residing in Rach Gia ward, decided to pursue a new path due to his love for flexibility and creativity. After much deliberation, in April 2024, he resigned to begin his freelance career. Utilizing his accumulated skills and experience, he established Lifeskills Event and Life Skills Education Company Limited, specializing in providing media services, event organization, and recreational and experiential activities for young people.
Transitioning from a government job to freelance work, Mr. Phung had advantages such as his previous work experience providing him with a solid professional foundation, the ability to organize work scientifically , and especially personal credibility in his relationships. “This is the foundation for me to gradually find clients and develop my business. Having control over my time allows me to flexibly implement ideas, boldly innovate, and try new models that suit current needs,” Mr. Phung shared.
However, upon leaving his "comfort zone," without a fixed salary or government benefits, and with everything depending on his abilities and initiative, Mr. Phung faced significant pressure. According to him, the most obvious pressure was financial, as he initially lacked a stable income. This was followed by pressure in finding clients, operations, managing costs, and handling risks. Therefore, the reality of being a freelancer is not entirely "free" as many people think. It's freedom that comes with high responsibility, and even more pressure than a stable job. "This choice is a change of job and a challenge to oneself, requiring perseverance, courage, and adaptability to gradually prove oneself," Mr. Phung said.
After two years of operation, Mr. Phung's company gradually stabilized, built up a loyal customer base, and expanded step by step. However, the event services and life skills education sector is highly competitive, and customer demands are increasingly high, requiring him to constantly innovate program content, improve service quality, and invest in creative ideas to create a unique brand identity.
Also choosing to pursue a career of independence, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, residing in Rach Gia ward, came to photography out of passion. Initially, he learned the trade and worked for a photo studio to gain experience. In the early days, he took on tasks such as assisting with photo shoots, editing photos, and supporting clients, which helped him hone his skills, understand market demands, and build relationships. After gaining enough experience and a stable client base, Mr. Thanh decided to open his own studio. "Going independent" not only gave him more control over his work but also allowed him to develop his personal style, improve service quality, and grow his brand.
Currently, Mr. Thanh owns VYVYA wedding studio on Nguyen Trung Truc Street, Rach Gia Ward, offering a full range of services including wedding photography, bridal makeup, wedding dress and suit rental, videography, and event photography. With a professional approach, he focuses on investing in equipment, keeping up with trends, and constantly innovating in each photo shoot to ensure customer satisfaction.
According to Mr. Thanh, the biggest advantage of choosing a freelance career is flexibility and opportunities for self-development, the ability to decide on one's own work, time, and direction, and potentially better income if one works effectively. However, freelance work also has many limitations compared to government jobs, such as unstable income and the need to cover operating costs independently. There are times when work is less busy and income decreases, so freelancers must know how to balance and manage their finances.
Freelancing isn't about "absolute freedom," but rather about freedom that comes with responsibility. Every job has its own advantages and disadvantages; the important thing is to clearly define your goals and capabilities to choose the right path and to prepare thoroughly if you want to commit to freelance work long-term.
