Diverse heritage education programs

Over the past period, the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center has proactively coordinated with other units to develop plans and program content for heritage education in Hue in a scientific manner and appropriate for each age group and educational level.

The program organized various activities with different themes, specifically: "Me and the Imperial Palace" for preschool children aged 5-6; 8 programs for primary and secondary school students, including activities such as: Exploring and experiencing the Hue Imperial Palace Heritage; visiting the Imperial Palace, experiencing and learning about Hue folk songs; "Imperial Palace Sounds" - learning about Hue court performing arts; visiting and exploring the Imperial Garden; experiencing heritage education at the Hue Imperial Palace Museum of Antiquities; visiting and experiencing An Dinh Palace; exploring the Tang Tho Pavilion; learning about and experiencing the tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty kings.

The heritage education program is designed to include both theory and practice, aiming to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of history, culture, art, and the process of preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage (tangible and intangible).

In the practical sessions, students have the opportunity to participate in activities such as royal court games, watch performances of Nha Nhac (royal court music), royal court dances, Hue folk songs, the changing of the guard ceremony, and interact directly with artisans, artists, and guides. In particular, the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center has developed a "Heritage Q&A" bank (containing 450 questions) along with creative and appropriate teaching aids, helping students easily absorb information and enthusiastically explore heritage.

Ms. Duong Nu Hoai Huong, an officer directly involved in implementing heritage education programs in Hue, shared: "We build schedules and class sizes in a reasonable way to ensure educational quality. The visual, engaging, and integrated teaching methods, combined with the application of technology, have helped convey essential information to the students. Through this, students not only grasp the history and culture of Hue's heritage but also develop a love and passion for exploration and research."

“In addition to the regular programs already developed by the Center, we also collaborate with Andrea Teufel, a German cultural heritage conservation expert, to organize six heritage education programs with diverse topics for primary school, secondary school, and university students.”

"Notable activities include: Heritage coloring, Hue art memory games, introductions to conservation and restoration work at the Phung Tien Palace relic, sharing about Fresco - a traditional painting technique for murals and building decoration, especially for architecture and art students, along with 3D creative activities…," Ms. Hoai Huong said.

Aiming for a "City of Education" linked with a "City of Heritage"

According to Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center, the Center is currently piloting a heritage education program for 163 schools in the former Hue City area (now belonging to Thuan Hoa and Phu Xuan districts), with a total of approximately 90,000 students participating.

The number of schools registering each year is quite large, forcing the Center to allocate maximum resources, but it is still unable to meet all the needs during the school year's main academic year. In addition, unfavorable weather during the prolonged rainy season in Hue also affects the organization of the program.

"Although we have invested heavily in heritage education, we still face some difficulties in terms of personnel and finances. Therefore, to make the programs increasingly high-quality, in-depth, and better meet the requirements of the education sector and the wishes of parents and students, we need the cooperation and mobilization of resources from many units," shared a representative from the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center.

Mr. Nguyen Tan, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Hue City, said: “Since 2013, when the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Education and Training issued guidelines on organizing cultural heritage education in schools, many diverse activities have been implemented in Hue. In particular, since 2019, the Department of Education and Training has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center on implementing a program to educate students about Hue's cultural heritage in schools. This collaboration has helped to promote and systematically implement cultural heritage education, yielding positive results.”

“Hue possesses a system of tangible and intangible cultural heritage sites recognized by UNESCO, along with many outstanding national and provincial-level relics. In particular, 100% of students in the area receive free admission when participating in the Heritage Education Program, creating favorable conditions for the implementation and dissemination of the program. Cultural heritage education not only helps students form and enhance their awareness of heritage protection, but also awakens pride in their homeland and country, helping them with career orientation and holistic development. At the same time, the program also contributes to building a friendly and happy educational environment,” Mr. Nguyen Tan emphasized.

According to the leaders of the Department of Education and Training, the education sector also cooperates with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other units to organize many cultural heritage education programs associated with other typical historical and cultural relics, such as: the system of special national relics related to President Ho Chi Minh in Hue, the General Nguyen Chi Thanh Memorial House, Phuoc Tich Ancient Village...

“Before each school year, schools proactively develop plans to participate in the Program and register with the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center for reasonable and convenient implementation. However, some schools in remote areas face difficulties with funding and transportation, so the program is flexibly organized in other forms. The Center has also sent artisans and guides to provide direct support at the schools,” Mr. Nguyen Tan said.

Leaders of the Hue City Department of Education and Training also shared that the sector is aiming to build a "City of Education" model linked to a "City of Heritage". The goal is to combine the preservation of cultural heritage and the development of education, creating a friendly and happy educational environment, while preserving and promoting the historical and cultural traditions of the nation and the locality.
