At the event venue, the food stalls were always bustling with visitors. At the Co Hai Homestay stall, fried shrimp cakes were being made continuously, but there still wasn't enough to serve everyone.
Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Diem, owner of Co Hai Homestay (An Thanh commune), said: “This is the first time I've participated in a promotional event of this scale. I brought local specialties such as banh num co (a type of rice cake), fried shrimp patties, banh candied fruit, ban flower tea, ban powder... with the hope of introducing the unique features of Dung islet to tourists from near and far. Hopefully, after enjoying them, many people will come to the area for more experiences.”
Visiting Can Tho for the first time during the Culture and Tourism Week, Ms. Dang Le Huyen Trang (Viet Tri ward, Phu Tho province) said she was very impressed with the exhibition space and the stalls selling local specialties. “The food was delicious, with a distinctly Mekong Delta flavor. The people were friendly and hospitable, so I will definitely come back,” Ms. Trang shared.
The highlight of the food court is that many dishes are prepared on the spot, and vendors provide detailed information about the origin, preparation, and enjoyment of each dish. Ms. Truong Thanh Hoang ( Ho Chi Minh City) commented: “I received very enthusiastic information about the traditional dishes, from their origins to their preparation methods. Each dish has its own unique characteristics. I think activities like this are essential for tourists to better understand local specialties.”
According to Ms. Do Phuc Linh, owner of Khanh Linh Restaurant (Binh Thuy Ward) and a member of the Can Tho Chefs Association, at this event, chefs brought about 30 signature dishes of the Mekong Delta such as banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake), banh khot (miniature savory pancakes), goi cuon (spring rolls), banh cuon dua (coconut rice rolls), bun mam (rice noodles with fermented fish sauce), oc hiep tieu (steamed snails with pepper)... All were prepared on-site so that visitors could observe and enjoy the authentic flavors.
Let's work together to spread the value of local cuisine.
After visiting the event, Ms. Ngo Nguyen Hong Loan (Ninh Kieu ward) highly appreciated the professionally organized space, which was rich in the spirit of the Mekong Delta. According to her, the culinary activities, from the artisans' area and the Can Tho Chefs Association to the buffet of traditional cakes and fruits, were all attractive, with beautifully presented, clean, and high-quality dishes.
Mr. Do The Vy, representative of Con Son Xanh Tourism Cooperative (Binh Thuy ward), said that the locals brought many kinds of traditional cakes and specialty fruits to the event to introduce to tourists. These are cakes associated with traditional craft villages such as banh hoi kim tien, banh bo, banh da lon... which are prepared by the people of Con Son themselves as a warm welcome to tourists.
Mr. Tran Thanh Thai, a member of the Standing Committee of the Can Tho City Tourism Association, the unit in charge of the "Thai Do Flavors" traditional cake and fruit buffet, said that the program was implemented out of a desire to show appreciation to tourists with local traditional dishes and specialty fruits. "All members brought the best products from their respective units. From orchards and tourist attractions to 4-5 star hotels, everyone joined hands to promote local cuisine. The good news is that the program received many positive responses from tourists," Mr. Thai shared.
According to Mr. Tran Thanh Thai, the success of the traditional cake and fruit buffet serves as a basis for the Can Tho City Tourism Association to continue developing this model in large-scale events in the city. In the long term, the association aims to build a separate Can Tho food festival to more widely promote the unique culinary values of the locality.
