Spreading the folk dance movement among women.

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế02/08/2023

Ms. Tran Thi Be, Head of the Lai Bang 2 Women's Association in Huong Van Ward, Huong Tra Town, said that her village has many activities, but the women enjoy folk dance the most. Unlike in the city, it's not easy for women in the countryside to attend folk dance classes every night. Some women's husbands forbid them from going, so Ms. Be has to assign her husband to go to the homes of those with strict husbands for tea every evening, while she goes to invite the wives to folk dance classes. Gradually, seeing their wives become healthier, many husbands voluntarily help their wives with housework so that the women have time to participate in community activities.

I still love the clip shared by Ms. Dang Thi Hue, President of the Women's Union of Quang An commune, Quang Dien district. Women in Quang An are mainly farmers, so dancing is still unfamiliar to them. Initially, they faced difficulties because they lacked instructors. The club members independently researched dance steps online, learned from YouTube, and then taught each other. Because they all shared a passion for dance, they learned very quickly. For each new song, after only a few sessions, the women knew the steps and could then match them to the music.

In short, folk dancing isn't as demanding or physically demanding as ballroom dancing; the movements are simple, easy to remember, and easy to learn, so women of all ages can participate. Following the music playing from a speaker placed in a corner of the yard, the women took turns practicing their dance moves in preparation for the "Healthy and Beautiful Dance" competition. I remember the smiles of Mrs. Sen and Ms. Luyen from the Women's Association of Quang An commune (Quang Dien district) as they said that since practicing folk dancing, their health has improved, and they are more confident and energetic. The women exchange stories about their lives, thereby strengthening the solidarity and bond among the female members.

Folk dancing is a suitable physical activity for women, especially in rural areas. It doesn't require special facilities or equipment; all that's needed is a spacious area like a yard, courtyard, or village cultural center hall. Many folk dance clubs are practicing adapted dances from waltz, cha-cha-cha, tango, zumba, etc., or incorporating them into songs expressing love for their homeland. These dances are easy to learn and dance, suitable for many age groups, and therefore have a strong appeal and spread widely in the community. This is a positive sign for the development of cultural and sports activities in villages and communes.

Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union, Ngo Thi Anh Tuyet, shared: "The folk dance movement not only helps women improve their health but also enhances the quality of cultural and artistic activities in the new rural development movement, especially model new rural areas in localities. Women step onto the stage, taking care of themselves, happy, healthy, young, and beautiful with the dances, their spirits uplifted, to be a support for their husbands and children, and to cultivate family happiness. Folk dancing also contributes to enriching the cultural and spiritual life in rural areas, while building the image of confident, civilized, and modern women."
