(Dan Tri Newspaper) - The colorful floating village on the Chau Doc River (An Phu district, An Giang province) is not only a place to enjoy natural beauty but also one of the unique cultural symbols of the An Giang region.
The Chau Doc floating fish farm village is located at the Chau Doc river junction, with over 160 brightly colored fish farms creating a vibrant and attractive scene for tourists . These fish farms, which were once the homes of local fishermen, have now become a unique tourist attraction and an interesting experience for visitors. The "Colorful Floating Village at Chau Doc Junction" project, spanning over 1km, is being implemented by the An Giang Provincial Trade and Investment Promotion Center. All 161 rafts and cages used for raising freshwater fish in the floating village are painted in six colors: red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple. Each fish farm raft is painted a different color, in sequence. Spanning over 1km in length, the colorful floating fish village of Chau Doc offers visitors exciting experiences, from admiring the stunning scenery to learning about the traditional fish farming methods of the local people. According to locals, currently only a few fishermen go out to catch seafood, mostly raising their own fish in rafts. "I used to be a fisherman, but I faced difficulties due to fluctuating water levels; sometimes it was very unprofitable. There were times when I fished all day and didn't catch a single fish. With the development of tourism , I chose to become a boat driver, taking tourists sightseeing," shared Mr. Ly Minh Tai (57 years old, Chau Doc City). "Having a boat is like having a motorbike on the shore. Those who don't have one rent a boat; each trip from the raft to the shore costs 20,000 dong. Usually, every family has one, it's just that sometimes the family is busy taking their children to school or bringing relatives across the raft for a visit," Mr. Tai said. Ms. Le Thi Mai's (56 years old, Chau Doc City) grocery boat has been weathered by time, operating for over a decade in the floating village. "Every day I travel all over the river to sell my goods. It's different on the raft compared to on land; if I sold at home, no one would come to buy, so I have to keep going. I've gotten used to it; I save up a little each day to live on," Ms. Mai said. Nguyen Van Xuan's (37 years old, Chau Doc City) fishing boat raises about 30,000 pomfret fish. Every day, he and his workers grind more than 400kg of fish feed. According to Xuan, they can harvest the fish after every two months. Upon arriving here, visitors can easily participate in activities such as sightseeing, taking photos, and enjoying delicious fresh fish raised locally. In addition, the fresh air and peaceful atmosphere of the river are a major plus, allowing visitors to enjoy wonderful moments of relaxation.
Many households utilize their available space to raise livestock and poultry in order to improve their daily lives. Currently, the floating village has two boat docks serving tourists. Within the village, there are displays of brocade weaving looms and souvenir shops selling traditional products of the local people. Many tourists visiting the Mekong Delta during the flood season are amazed by the vibrant colors of Chau Doc's floating villages, resembling a rainbow standing out at the confluence of the rivers. This is a new local tourism product that is expected to attract domestic and international tourists to An Giang.
