Impressive destination
One day in mid-September, we had the opportunity to visit Tra Que vegetable village in Tra Que hamlet, Cam Ha commune, about 3km from the center of Hoi An city. We were delighted to witness many foreign tourists experiencing farming activities there. The owner of the garden, Mr. Nguyen Len (59 years old), was instructing tourists on how to water the newly planted cabbage rows. Both the tourists and the owner were happy and enjoyed the experience of being farmers in the vegetable village.
“In the last two years, the number of visitors coming to the vegetable garden for hands-on experiences has been increasing, mostly from Western countries. They bring their families, including children, to participate in the experience. They plant vegetables in the prepared soil, and the adults carry buckets to water them. The whole family takes photos of themselves farming. They seem to really enjoy these experiences,” Mr. Len said.
According to our observations, the vegetable fields in Tra Que village have been improved with clean, well-maintained concrete roads, allowing vehicles to drive directly to the vast fields of lush green vegetables, including herbs, cabbage, perilla, mint, celery, and more. In recent years, Tra Que vegetable village has welcomed an increasing number of visitors, leading to a rise in the income of local people through the integration of tourism and agriculture.
Visitors to Tra Que vegetable village can experience cycling through lush green vegetable fields, try their hand at farming with real vegetable growers, and prepare dishes from fresh vegetables themselves; as well as sample some Quang Nam specialties such as Quang noodles and Cao Lau... all for just 35,000 VND per person. The ideal time to experience this is usually early morning or late afternoon to avoid the harsh midday sun and to immerse yourself in the romantic beauty of the smooth vegetable fields.
According to locals, Tra Que vegetable village has a history of over 300 years, with many types of vegetables grown on an area of about 40 hectares. In recent years, Tra Que has become an indispensable destination for tourists whenever they visit Hoi An. In particular, the local people's vegetable farming process focuses on environmental friendliness, absolutely avoiding the use of chemicals and pesticides to ensure the health of consumers.
Thanks to the efforts of the people and local authorities, in April 2022, Tra Que Vegetable Village was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage under the category of "Folk knowledge and traditional crafts". This is a source of pride for the people and also opens up opportunities for tourism development associated with traditional craft villages.
In early December 2024, at the International Conference on Rural Tourism held in Hoi An, attended by hundreds of delegates from over 50 countries and territories, Tra Que Vegetable Village was the only representative from Vietnam to be honored with the title of "Best Tourism Village" by the United Nations Tourism Organization. This event opens up a new opportunity for the people of Tra Que in particular, and Hoi An in general, as a highlight in the development of tourism linked to rural agriculture.
Brand affirmation
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of a recent conference, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, said: The recognition of Tra Que Vegetable Village as the best tourist village reflects the efforts of the people in preserving local cultural values; traditional crafts; as well as the long-standing lifestyle and customs of the local people. The award is an acknowledgment of the creativity and focus on developing community-based, sustainable tourism; and demonstrates the genuine hospitality of the local people.
Furthermore, the recognition of Tra Que Vegetable Village as the best tourist village in the world will contribute to honoring the value, spreading the brand, and promoting tourism in Hoi An and Quang Nam to international tourists. In recent times, the Hoi An city government has provided many guidelines and directions for tourism development in the city, including Tra Que Vegetable Village. This has helped Hoi An tourism become increasingly diverse, offering tourists many experiences from the Japanese Bridge, Thanh Ha Pottery Village, boat trips on the Hoai River, Tra Que Vegetable Village, and more.
According to Mr. Hong, in order to promote the brand of Tra Que Vegetable Village as a tourist destination, and to build the best tourist space to serve visitors, the People's Committee of Hoi An City has just approved the Outline of the task of building a tourist route at Cu Lao Cham - Tra Que Vegetable Village - Thanh Ha Pottery Village.
Accordingly, Hoi An aims for 100% of homestay and villa businesses in Tra Que vegetable village to be recognized as meeting green tourism standards according to the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria; and 50% of restaurants and cooking schools to practice green tourism.
Local authorities will support and guide residents and businesses in practicing green tourism at homestays, villas, restaurants, and cooking classes, and promote the green tourism route of Tra Que vegetable village.
“The construction of a green tourist route in Tra Que vegetable village aims to exploit tourism products that harmoniously combine the values of natural resources and socio-cultural aspects; and at the same time promote the development of green tourism models in the province. With the efforts of the people and the government, it is expected that in the future, Tra Que vegetable village will attract even more visitors,” Mr. Hong said.
