"I've been waiting for this moment for a long time," Ginny said at her graduation ceremony on June 16, according to USA Today .

Unable to finish her thesis, she had to follow her husband.

In 1936, Ginny enrolled at Stanford University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1940.

A year later, Ginny had completed all her courses to earn her master's degree. While Ginny was working on her thesis, her then-boyfriend, George Hislop, was called up to serve in the military during World War II.

Therefore, the couple decided to get married, and Ginny moved with her husband to Fort Sill, a U.S. military outpost in Oklahoma.

Ginny shared: "At the time, I thought that I really enjoyed studying and could complete a master's program later, so I got married and followed my husband."

Ginny Hislop received her master's degree at the age of 105.

After the war, Ginny and her husband, along with their two children, moved to Yakima, Washington.

Despite having her master's studies interrupted, Ginny leveraged her knowledge to pursue a career in education .

Initially, Ginny joined a local school board because she disagreed with the school's decision to steer her daughter toward a home economics program.

Later, she served as chair of the boards of trustees for city and state-level public schools in Washington; and was a founding member of the boards of trustees for Yakima Community College and Heritage University (Toppenish, Washington).

Ginny said, “I feel that all children should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and that everyone should have the opportunity to receive a higher education. I think I have done my best to develop the school system.”

Now, Ginny remains actively involved in the community and spends more time with her four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ginny Hislop, 105, received her master's degree at the Stanford University graduation ceremony.

Received a master's degree after more than 80 years.

“The biggest lesson I learned from my mother-in-law is that you never really stop learning. She was an avid reader and at 105, she’s still very active,” shared Doug Jensen, Ginny Hislop’s son-in-law.

Recently, Mr. Jensen contacted Stanford University to inquire about his mother-in-law's case. At the time she left Stanford in 1940, Ginny had earned enough credits to graduate, but had not completed her thesis.

After eight decades, Stanford University adjusted its master's program and no longer requires a thesis. Therefore, Ginny is eligible to graduate with a master's degree.

During the graduation ceremony, as Ginny moved to the stage to receive her master's degree, her entire family—children, grandchildren, and fellow students—gave up and applauded to congratulate her.
