Việt NamViệt Nam13/08/2024

Every year, from mid-January to the end of March according to the lunar calendar, most temples and shrines in Lai Thieu, Binh Duong , hold the Ky Yen Festival. This is not only a festival with spiritual significance, praying for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and a prosperous nation, but also a celebration honoring the beautiful traditional culture of the people of Southern Vietnam for generations.
Vietnam.vn invites you to learn about this festival through the photo series "Ky Yen Festival at Phu Long Temple - Lai Thieu - Binh Duong" by author Do Trong Nghia. The author submitted this photo series to the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

The Phu Long communal temple's Ky Yen festival is a major event held every three years, and therefore is organized on a larger scale than other festivals. The Ky Yen festival officially begins with the opening ceremony, followed by a procession carrying the divine effigy, including the left and right sides, the ancestors, the later generations, the flower-decorated chariot, the divine effigy palanquin, and the ceremonial committee of the Phu Long communal temple.

According to the beliefs of the Vietnamese people in general, and the people of Southern Vietnam in particular, there is a custom of worshipping deities. Almost every region has a tutelary deity – a figure who contributed to the development and preservation of that land. At the beginning of the new year, depending on the customs of each place, the people in the region will organize a worship ceremony (temple worship) also known as the Ky Yen Ceremony (meaning a ceremony to pray for peace). The Ky Yen ceremony is a ritual praying for "favorable weather, peace and prosperity for the nation." Depending on local customs, the timing, order, and details of this ceremony will vary. The Ky Yen ceremony held in 2023 at Phu Long Temple in Lai Thieu, Binh Duong, began with the Opening Ceremony. Next is the procession of the sacred deity, carrying the palanquin through the inner city streets of Lai Thieu along with traditional rituals that reflect the community's cultural values in the spiritual life and religious beliefs of the Lai Thieu residents, expressing gratitude to their ancestors who contributed to the establishment of the village, praying for favorable weather, and bringing peace to all the people. The procession of the sacred deity includes the left and right wings, the ancestors, the later generations, the flower-decorated chariot carrying the deity, the palanquin of the sacred deity, and the ceremonial team of Phu Long communal temple. The procession paraded through the inner streets of Lai Thieu ward, giving people the opportunity to pay their respects. Following the ceremony of welcoming the deity, a series of activities took place, such as: chanting prayers for peace, traditional folk music performances, a ceremony honoring the ancestors; the main ceremony of the grand worship; a ceremony honoring fallen soldiers; traditional opera performances; and the ceremony of honoring the king. The Ky Yen festival at Phu Long communal temple was organized with all the traditional rituals, reflecting the community life in the cultural and spiritual life and the worship of deities by the local people. The Ky Yen festival is also an opportunity for the present generation to express gratitude to the previous generations who contributed to the founding and establishment of the village, and to pray for favorable weather, bountiful harvests, and a peaceful life for everyone. At the end of 2001, Phu Long communal temple was recognized as a national-level architectural and artistic heritage. To this day, the temple still retains some community activities with festivals held annually and periodically, among which the Ky Yen festival is the occasion when the most people gather.
