Attending the ceremony, on the Vietnamese side were the Director of the Vietnam Missing Persons Search Agency (VNOSMP) and representatives from several units of the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Public Security . On the US side were representatives from the US Embassy in Hanoi, the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, the Office of the Defense Attaché, the US MIA Office in Hanoi, and a number of veterans and US citizens in Da Nang.
At the ceremony, Vietnam handed over a casket containing human remains to the United States. This was the result of a recent joint search effort by the Vietnam-U.S. joint excavation operation in Hue City.
Previously, on April 27, 2026, these remains were examined by forensic experts from Vietnam and the United States, who preliminarily concluded that they may be related to US servicemen missing in action during the Vietnam War. They will be transferred to a forensic laboratory in Hawaii for analysis and identification.
Humanitarian cooperation in searching for and cataloging US servicemen missing in action during the Vietnam War, initiated by both countries immediately after the signing of the Paris Agreement in 1973, has yielded positive results. To date, it has helped the United States identify and return the remains of approximately 740 US servicemen missing in action in Vietnam. This is a highly significant achievement for the US people and government , contributing to the promotion of cooperation in addressing the consequences of war between the two countries in general, including US efforts in searching for and identifying the remains of missing Vietnamese soldiers; demining; dioxin decontamination; and supporting war-related disabilities.
According to Mr. Le Cong Tien, Director of VNOSMP, in the coming time, MIA operations will face many challenges due to the dwindling number of witnesses and information, and the remaining crime scenes are very difficult to access and at risk of being affected by natural disasters and socio-economic development. With the highest sense of responsibility, VNOSMP will continue to cooperate closely with the US side to implement this important humanitarian mission, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam-US relations.
