According to initial reports, a storm that occurred around 3:30 PM on May 24th damaged the roofs of 15 houses in Hamlet 2A, Phong Thanh Commune. Initial estimates of the damage exceed 150 million VND.
Also on the afternoon of May 24th, a storm ripped off the roofs of 34 houses in residential areas 19A, 20, 22, and Phong Thanh in Gia Rai ward. Many roads were affected. Local authorities are currently assessing the damage; there were no casualties.
Thunderstorms, followed by tornadoes, caused damage to houses and property of residents in hamlets 16B, 19, 20, and 21 in Lang Tron ward.
Immediately after receiving the information, local authorities dispatched military and police forces to the scene to coordinate with residents in assisting affected households to overcome the consequences. Local forces were also mobilized to help residents clean up the scene and reinforce roofs. Currently, local authorities are continuing to assess the damage and support severely affected households to quickly stabilize their lives.
According to local residents, the tornado lasted only a short time, but the strong winds and heavy rain caused many corrugated iron roofs to be blown away and damaged many household items. Residents had to move their belongings and put up temporary shelters to protect them from further damage caused by the rain.
In recent days, the weather in Ca Mau has been erratic, with heavy rain and thunderstorms occurring in many areas in the late afternoon and evening. Authorities advise people to proactively reinforce their houses, trim trees, and monitor weather forecasts to minimize damage during the rainy and stormy season.
According to Truong Van Phuong, Deputy Head of the Irrigation Department and Deputy Chief of the Office of the Civil Defense Command of Ca Mau province, to proactively prevent and effectively respond to the situation, the Provincial Civil Defense Command requests that units and localities closely monitor weather developments; promptly inform and warn people to proactively take preventive measures. At the same time, they should proactively implement response plans appropriate to the actual conditions in their localities; and have forces and resources ready to support people in overcoming the consequences when situations arise.
Given the complex weather patterns as the rainy season approaches, the leaders of the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee have directed all levels and sectors to strengthen measures to prevent and mitigate damage caused by thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and strong winds in the area.
Accordingly, to proactively prevent, respond promptly, and minimize damage, the Provincial People's Committee requests the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, departments, agencies, and the People's Committees of communes and wards to closely monitor weather developments, promptly inform, publicize, and advise people to implement preventive measures.
