A Chinese man became so angry while helping his son with homework that he suffered a heart attack and nearly died.
A man surnamed Zhang, in his 40s from Zhejiang Province, China, began experiencing shortness of breath and chest pain while helping his son prepare for the high school entrance exam.
Things became so tense that Mr. Zhang had to be hospitalized and diagnosed with an acute myocardial infarction. Doctors at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital performed emergency coronary artery bypass surgery and saved his life. The cause of the heart attack was believed to be early coronary artery disease, a life-threatening condition often worsened by stress.
In Truong's case, the constant stress of supervising her son's studies was the trigger for her heart attack.
Zhang's case has once again sparked debate surrounding the intense academic pressure faced by Chinese teenagers and their parents. The level of stress parents experience when it comes to their children's education is so high that it has led to serious physical health problems for them.
Over the past year, many Chinese parents have been hospitalized due to health problems caused by stress while teaching their children. In February, a father in Zhejiang suffered serious eye damage from stress while helping his child with homework. Similarly, a mother in Jiangsu suffered a stroke after losing her temper with her daughter when the girl didn't finish her homework before bedtime.
One of the reasons for this tension is the societal view of education in China. Here, academic achievement is not just a matter for the student alone, but also a measure of the family's success.
Many parents view the university entrance exam as the only "golden door" to a bright future, constantly pushing their children to study hard. With over 13 million students taking the university entrance exam annually, the competition to get into top universities is increasingly fierce and intense. This has created a high-pressure educational environment where students study day and night and parents act as strict supervisors.
Professor Ling Zongwei, an education expert in China, has advised parents to control their emotions and create a healthier learning environment for their children.
According to him, parents shouldn't interfere too much in their children's studies but should encourage them to take responsibility for their homework and academic results. This is the way to reduce stress and bring balance to the lives of both parents and children.
