Lewandowski feels betrayed by the Polish head coach. |
While coach Michal Probierz insisted that stripping him of the captaincy was "for the good of the team," Lewandowski soon expressed his frustration in an interview with Sportowe Fakty .
"I was surprised to receive a call from coach Michal Probierz informing me that I was no longer captain. At the time, I was putting my children to sleep," Lewandowski said. "The call only lasted a few minutes; I didn't even have time to tell my family or anyone else before the information appeared on the Federation's website. The way they communicated this really shocked me."
The Barcelona striker expressed his disappointment: "He broke the previous agreements between us. I wasn't captain for just one or two years, but for 11 years and dedicated 17 years to the national team. With such a long commitment, things should have been handled more respectfully, especially since it's still a long time before the team reconvenes."
Lewandowski emphasized that the issue wasn't about losing the captain's armband, but about the disrespectful treatment: "I'm not hurt by losing the captaincy. What hurts me is the way they said it. The national team has always been my number one priority, I've always given my all. But this time, I felt betrayed."
Currently, Lewandowski has announced his retirement from the national team until there is a change on the coaching staff. The future of the legendary striker with the "White Eagles" has become more uncertain than ever.
Lewandowski's stature in Polish football history is undeniable. Since making his national team debut in 2008, he has scored 85 goals in 158 matches. At club level, Lewandowski conquered the Bundesliga with Dortmund and Bayern Munich, won the Champions League in 2020, before continuing his success in La Liga with Barcelona.
