Linking for sustainable production

Thanks to close ties with growers, the mushroom spawn production model of Ms. Nguyen Thien Thuy's family (residing in Thanh Huong 2 village, Loc Thanh commune, Bao Loc city, Lam Dong province) has achieved great success.

Ms. Nguyen Thien Thuy is the owner of the Long Thuy mushroom spawn production farm. For many years, the amount of spawn produced from her family's farm has been supplied to the mushroom-growing community of Hamlet 4, Dam B'ri Commune, Bao Loc City.

Ms. Thuy explained that instead of importing sawdust for processing like some other nurseries, she chose to buy wood herself, grind it into sawdust, handling everything from start to finish. Once the wood is ground into sawdust, Ms. Thuy adds nutrients, maintains moisture, and then sterilizes it through a steaming process before inoculating it with mushroom spawn.

After inoculation, the mushroom spawn bags are hung on racks, maintaining a stable environment for 45 days. When the spawn turns white, the bags are ready for distribution to farmers.

In the production of shiitake mushroom spawn, maintaining hygiene and ensuring a stable environment is paramount. Therefore, Ms. Thuy's breeding farm is built to be well-ventilated and cool, and the inoculation process is carried out under sterile conditions.

To obtain the culture, she selects beautiful mushroom caps, then isolates the strain in agar medium, followed by culturing rice, then cassava plants, before finally having enough product to inoculate into bags. Importantly, throughout the production process, Ms. Thuy strictly adheres to and closely monitors all procedures to prevent any disease transmission from the wood powder.

Currently, Ms. Thuy only harvests each bag of mushroom substrate once, ensuring a yield of 25g to 30g of dried mushrooms, providing a stable income of 15,000 to 20,000 VND per bag. Thanks to the income from growing wood ear mushrooms, Ms. Thuy's family's economic situation is improving.

"Because I've established a long-term relationship with the mushroom growers, I always have to ensure the quality of the mushroom spawn. Many people advised me to produce commercial shiitake mushrooms from my family's spawn bags to increase my income, but I didn't do it."

"Cultivating commercial mushrooms is different from making mushroom substrates. If you produce commercial mushrooms and make substrates at the same time, it's very easy for diseases to spread to the mushroom substrates, compromising the quality for farmers," Ms. Thuy shared.

Reportedly, thanks to the use of high-quality mushroom spawn and technical support from Ms. Thuy's production facility, mushroom growers in Dam B'ri commune have minimized many risks in the cultivation process, improving the yield and quality of wood ear mushrooms.

Besides providing mushroom spawn, the farm also offers technical guidance and supplies biological pesticides to help farmers cultivate mushrooms effectively. Maintaining her reputation, Ms. Thuy's products are sold as soon as they are produced.

Initially, many people in the area didn't know about cultivating wood ear mushrooms, but thanks to the dedicated guidance from Ms. Thuy's mushroom spawn production facility, they later became involved in mushroom farming, leading to a comfortable life and savings.

As for Ms. Thuy's facility, through its collaboration in producing wood ear mushroom spawn, it has contributed to the successful development of the wood ear mushroom growing area in Dam B'ri commune, Bao Loc city, Lam Dong province.
