MU struggles to regain its former glory. |
In an interview with Sky Sports , the Dutch tactician insisted that Manchester United had become "a commercial club, not a football club". He said: "When the manager doesn't decide who to buy, it becomes very difficult. If other people buy players, you have problems."
Coach Van Gaal also called on Manchester United to learn from Liverpool, where coach Arne Slot has freedom in selecting players. "The coach needs to be trusted to choose the right person, because he is the one who directly trains them. Manchester United should look at how Liverpool operates and achieve success. They should learn from that," the former Netherlands coach emphasized.
Van Gaal came to Old Trafford to work in 2014, replacing David Moyes. During his two seasons leading the "Red Devils", Van Gaal led the team to win the FA Cup in 2016, but just a few days after that success, he was fired.
Since then, Manchester United have been in a tailspin, despite spending billions of pounds on transfers. Van Gaal's warning comes as Manchester United have endured their worst season in the Premier League era.
Last season they failed to win any trophies and failed to qualify for European competition for the second time since 1990. New coach Ruben Amorim faces the same dilemma as many of his predecessors.
