US President-elect Donald Trump continues to attract attention by choosing an oil and gas company leader with opposing views on climate change for the position of Secretary of Energy.
Yesterday (Vietnam time), President-elect Trump announced his selection of Mr. Chris Wright, founder and CEO of Liberty Energy Oil Company in Denver (Colorado, USA), for the position of Secretary of Energy, Reuters reported.
Controversial
US media reported that Mr. Wright has been continuously advocating for oil and gas development, including the use of hydraulic fracturing technology to extract oil and gas, which is considered to have major consequences for the environment. According to CBS News, Mr. Wright is expected to support a plan to increase oil and gas production in the US to the maximum level in order to make the country "energy dominant" in the global market.

Liberty Energy's CEO is also said to share Mr. Trump's view on opposing the world's cooperation to respond to climate change. "There is no climate crisis, and we are not in the process of an energy transition," Mr. Wright said last year. CBS News noted that Mr. Trump's nominee for Secretary of Energy has no political experience. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy handles policy diplomacy, manages the national petroleum reserve, and administers grant and loan programs to develop energy technologies. The Secretary of Energy is also responsible for overseeing nuclear weapons, radioactive waste, and 17 laboratories across the United States. In another development, Mr. Trump yesterday also announced that he has chosen his personal lawyer, William Owen Scharf, to be the assistant to the president and White House press secretary when his new term begins.

The office of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced yesterday that this leader and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru agreed to continue developing trilateral cooperation with the US when Mr. Trump officially takes office in January next year. The two leaders of South Korea and Japan met on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Lima (Peru) on November 16. On the same day, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that his relationship with the US President-elect had gotten off to an extremely good start, based on a bilateral phone call after Mr. Trump was elected.
