According to the Hai Phong Department of Agriculture and Environment, for the spring crop of 2026, the city aims to plant over 78,500 hectares of rice, with an estimated yield of approximately 68.5 quintals/hectare. Early spring rice will account for 4-5% of the planted area (about 3,200 hectares), while the remaining 95-96% will be late spring rice (about 75,300 hectares).
Early spring rice cultivation uses rice varieties with a growth period of 160-180 days, sowing seedlings from December 15-20, 2025, and transplanting from February 1-10, 2026 when the seedlings have 4-5.5 leaves.
The spring rice crop utilizes short-day rice varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases, yielding high productivity and quality. Rice varieties with a growth period of 140-160 days can be sown from January 10-15, 2026, and transplanted from February 10-15, 2026, when the seedlings have 3-5 leaves. Rice varieties with a growth period of 120-140 days can be sown in nurseries, on hard ground, densely sown, or in trays and transplanted by machine from February 1-10, 2026, and transplanted from February 11-28, 2026, when the seedlings have 2.5-3 leaves. Direct sowing can be done from February 10-20, 2026.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of the city recommends that localities select a maximum of 5-7 rice varieties from the crop structure for planting; rice varieties that have not been recognized or circulated should not be included in the crop structure. Farmers are advised to plant in a concentrated manner, according to the seasonal schedule, avoiding early water intake and planting ahead of schedule, especially in some localities that take advantage of high tides to draw water from upstream.
Some localities are facing water shortages and need to proactively plan and direct the shift to growing vegetables when there is insufficient water for planting and irrigation.
