Air passenger numbers have increased sharply.

VnExpressVnExpress26/06/2023

In the first six months of the year, air passenger traffic increased by nearly 30%, with the number of international passengers flying to and from Vietnam reaching over 14.4 million, almost five times higher than the same period last year.

According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), passenger traffic at airports in the first six months of 2023 recovered well, especially with the international market, as the Covid-19 pandemic was effectively controlled.

Passenger volume in the past six months reached 56.8 million, achieving 48% of the 2023 plan and increasing by 29% compared to the same period last year. Of this, international arrivals and departures reached 14.4 million, an increase of over 490% compared to the same period last year, while domestic passengers reached over 42 million, an increase of 2% compared to the same period.

Domestic and international airlines operated nearly 365,000 flights, an 18% increase, including over 99,200 international flights, a more than 150% increase compared to the same period last year.

According to ACV leaders, the recovery of international aviation is due to the open-door policies of countries, including the recovery of Northeast Asian markets such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.

In 2019, Vietnamese airports set a record by welcoming 119 million passengers, including 41.7 million international travelers.

In the first five months of the year, international tourist arrivals to Vietnam also increased, reaching nearly 4.6 million, a 13-fold increase compared to the same period last year and equivalent to 63% of the 2019 figure. According to the General Statistics Office, the top 10 international tourist markets for Vietnam currently include: South Korea, mainland China, the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Australia, and India. The top 10 list has changed before and after the pandemic. Before 2019, Russia, the United Kingdom, or France were usually among the countries with the highest number of tourists to Vietnam. After the pandemic, the European market dropped out of the top, replaced by Cambodia and India.
