Bank deposits have fallen sharply.

The first-quarter business results recently announced by several banks show a sharp decline in customer deposits.

As a bank projected to have a large amount of deposits in 2025, BIDV recently announced a sharp decline in deposits in the first quarter. At the end of 2025, customer deposits at the bank reached over 2.22 trillion VND (an increase of 270,000 billion VND, equivalent to 13.8% in just one year). However, in the first three months of 2026, these deposits decreased to 2.141 trillion VND, a drop of over 82,000 billion VND compared to the end of 2025, equivalent to nearly 3.7% – the sharpest decline in many years. Conversely, compared to the deposit figures, BIDV's loan balance continued to increase in the first three months of the year, reaching nearly 2.43 trillion VND, an increase of nearly 57,000 billion VND compared to the end of 2025, equivalent to approximately 2.4%. Due to increased capital pressure, this bank issued securities in the first quarter, increasing the amount by 78,000 billion VND compared to the end of the year, bringing the total amount of securities to 303,000 billion VND.

Another bank that saw a decrease in customer deposits in the first quarter was MB, down by 15,000 billion VND to approximately 905,918 billion VND. Meanwhile, customer loan balances continued to expand, reaching over 1.12 million billion VND, while the securities investment portfolio also increased sharply by more than 16%. The amount of securities issued by this bank also increased to 21,580 billion VND in the first three months of the year, reaching 208,816 billion VND. Pre-tax profit in the first quarter reached 9,628 billion VND, an increase of nearly 15% compared to the same period last year, recording a record high for the first quarter of the year.

In addition, other banks also experienced a decrease in customer deposits, such asACB, which saw a decrease of VND 17,607 billion in the first three months of the year, down to VND 570,267 billion; Techcombank, which decreased from VND 665,550 billion at the end of 2025 to VND 650,921 billion, a decrease of 2.2%; VietBank, whose customer deposits decreased from VND 101,645 billion to VND 96,713 billion, a decrease of approximately 4.3%; Sacombank, which decreased by 2.8% to VND 600,789 billion; TPBank, which decreased by 4.3% to VND 267,038 billion; and SeABank, which decreased by 3.1% to VND 185,876 billion…

Meanwhile, the Q1 2026 financial reports of the three major banks, Vietcombank , VietinBank, and BIDV, recorded a State Treasury deposit balance of VND 563,036 billion, an increase of nearly 39% compared to the end of 2025.
