Bale admitted that choosing Real Madrid over Manchester United opened the most brilliant chapter in his playing career. |
Speaking on The Overlap , Bale recalled the period when he became a top transfer target in European football after a breakout season with Tottenham Hotspur.
"I spoke with Manchester United in 2013. They actually offered more than Real Madrid, and I also spoke with David Moyes," Bale recounted. "But my heart was with Madrid. I also had a contractual agreement with Daniel Levy."
According to Bale, the Tottenham chairman at the time did not want to sell him to a direct rival in England. Although the negotiations were not easy, Levy ultimately respected his commitment to allow the player to play abroad.
This decision paved the way for Real Madrid to complete what was then a world- record transfer. Bale also stated that prioritizing the Spanish team over Manchester United was the right choice for his career.
"Looking back over the last 12 years, I think I made the right choice," Bale said. "I didn't pursue the salary option with Manchester United. They offered a higher transfer fee and even included players, but things didn't really progress much."
The 36-year-old former striker further revealed that Real Madrid showed their determination very early on by reserving the number 11 shirt for him and contacting many relevant people directly to push the deal forward.
Upon joining Santiago Bernabeu, Bale became a key player during one of Real Madrid's most successful periods in history. He won numerous major titles, most notably three La Liga championships and five Champions League titles, and scored many decisive goals in finals.
