According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Ederson from Atalanta for a fee of £35 million plus £4 million in add-ons. The terms between the two sides are almost finalized, but the deal cannot be completed yet because the 26-year-old has just been called up to Brazil's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Ederson's opportunity arose when AS Roma defender Wesley suffered an groin injury in a friendly match against Egypt and was forced to withdraw from the tournament. After receiving the results of the medical examination, the Brazilian Football Confederation decided to call up Ederson as a replacement to strengthen the midfield for coach Carlo Ancelotti's team.
The midfielder, currently under contract with Atalanta, will immediately join the "Selecao" to prepare for their opening match against Morocco on June 13th. This means that MU has not yet been able to finalize the last procedures and will likely have to wait until after the World Cup to announce the new contract.
This development came as a surprise to the Old Trafford club. Previously, the MU management hoped to quickly finalize the deal to give Ederson more time to acclimatize to his new environment before the 2026/27 season. However, the Brazilian midfielder's participation in the biggest league on the planet also provides an opportunity for the English team to more thoroughly assess the capabilities of their long-pursued target.
Ederson had an impressive season with Atalanta and is considered one of the most complete central midfielders in Serie A. His strong tackling ability, excellent physical fitness, and mobility in both attack and defense have made him a target for many big clubs in Europe.
