Manchester United were considering Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the interim manager position for the remainder of the season. |
According to The Times , Chris Wilcox and Omar Berrada, two of the club's top figures in the sporting department, are willing to bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back. However, the club's owners, including the Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe, dislike the idea.
The appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager received greater consensus from all parties, including the leadership and owners. Manchester United's Technical Director, Christopher Vivell, also acknowledged Carrick's clear style of football and believed that with the current quality of players at MU, he could make a difference.
Vivell rated Carrick higher than Solskjaer because the Manchester United technical director believed Ole's coaching methods were somewhat outdated, reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson's era. Carrick, on the other hand, had a more modern approach.
On January 13th, Solskjaer was informed directly by Wilcox that he was not the chosen candidate. Although disappointed, the Norwegian coach happily accepted the decision, as he also preferred a long-term contract rather than a temporary one lasting only a few months until the summer.

Carrick served as interim manager at the end of 2021, during the transition period after Solskjaer was sacked, and has a good understanding of the team's internal environment. |
Solskjaer believes Manchester United needs a major rebuild to close the gap with the top teams in the Premier League. He made this view clear to the club's executives in previous discussions.
Meanwhile, Carrick was willing to work for a few months and then make way for another manager without demanding too much. This is what helped the former Manchester United midfielder get the job. Carrick had also previously served as interim manager at the club and impressed during his early time at Middlesbrough before being sacked.
Carrick's first match as interim manager has been confirmed as the Manchester derby on January 17th, at Old Trafford. This is considered a highly challenging debut, given the immense pressure on Man Utd regarding results and form.
