Scene on fire "Explosion in the Coconut Forest" tells the story of a family of three and villagers fleeing from bombs and bullets. Ly Hai strives to recreate the brutality of war with broken coconut trees, damaged houses, and bombs falling continuously, burning everything to the ground. The director stated that the film's message is that the smoke and fire of war make life fragile, and people's dreams become insignificant in the face of adversity.
The location selection process was difficult. The director wanted the scenes to be authentic and connected to historical landmarks. The film crew found several coconut grove areas in central Vietnam, but none were suitable because filming was prohibited or the locations lacked historical significance.
The team found a suitable location in the commune. Thien Nghiep, Ham Tien ward, Binh Thuan province. This place witnessed many battles between our ancestors and the invading army. The owner of the coconut forest also experienced and witnessed losses during the resistance war against the US.
"Battles and bombings took place here, just like in the movie." Flip Face 8: The Bracelet of Sunshine. "Many of the coconut trees here still bear the marks of bombs and bullets," the filmmaker shared.
In the large-scale explosion scene filmed live, the film crew did not rely heavily on CGI technology. The crew prepared thoroughly, inviting explosion experts to ensure the scene was filmed safely.
The crew said they used five large cameras and two drones to film the large-scale explosion scenes. Actors and crew members memorized the locations and avoided getting close to the explosion sites. Ly Hai felt pressured performing the explosions in the coconut forest, depicting the brutality of war. A representative from the crew said one camera was scorched during the detonation.
