MU needs a lot of money to find a new manager.

A wrong decision

At the start of the 2024-2025 season, Manchester United had a new leadership team in football, as billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS Group spent over £1.3 billion to acquire a 27.7% stake, co-owning the English giant with the Glazer family. Among Ratcliffe's initial decisions in restructuring Manchester United was the question of whether to keep or replace manager Erik ten Hag. The 54-year-old Dutchman had just completed his second season leading MU to the FA Cup, following their League Cup victory the previous season.

Will coach Nistelrooy (left) , replacing Erik ten Hag, help Manchester United overcome their difficulties?

During manager ten Hag's tenure, Manchester United spent over £616.8 million on players, but in return they only won two domestic league titles, while their playing style remained undefined and lacked identity. In major competitions like the Premier League, the "Red Devils" declined from 3rd place in the 2022-2023 season to 8th place in the 2023-2024 season. They were also unsuccessful in European competitions, reaching only the quarter-finals of the Europa League at best, while being eliminated early in the Champions League group stage (finishing last in their group).

This shows that the results were not commensurate with the huge investment, as MU had spent a lot of money buying players as requested by ten Hag, but most of them did not meet expectations. Therefore, when billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and his associates at INEOS Group took over the football division of the team, MU fans expected them to replace this manager with a new strategist with better stature and strategy for a fresh start.

However, this new leadership made a mistake by continuing to place their trust in coach ten Hag for their project, even extending his contract until June 2026. In addition, they added former player Ruud van Nistelrooy and assistant Rene Hake to the coaching staff, while letting veteran assistant coaches Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren leave.

Manchester United were expected to make changes when manager ten Hag was given further funds to buy players to complete the squad in his third season. They spent nearly £180 million on him, bringing in five new players, but things remained the same, or even worse, stagnated.

Manchester United are experiencing their worst run of form in the club's history, with only 3 wins in the Premier League after the first 9 matches this season, along with 2 draws and 4 losses; and 3 draws in the Europa League. Following the defeat to West Ham on October 27th, the MU board decided to sack manager ten Hag after nearly two and a half years of collaboration.

Alternatives

For the time being, assistant coach Nistelrooy will temporarily lead MU for the next two matches: against Leicester City in the fourth round of the English League Cup (2:45 AM on October 31st), and against Chelsea in the tenth round of the Premier League (11:30 PM on November 3rd). At the same time, they are searching for a suitable new manager.

According to the British press, Manchester United have been secretly negotiating with Xavi (former Barcelona coach) for the past 10 days, and most recently with Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP. In addition, the list of coaches being considered by the "Red Devils" management also includes Edin Terzic (former Borussia Dortmund coach) and Thomas Frank of Brentford…

Choosing one of these coaches to lead the team would cost MU a lot of money, including a very high salary (around £10 million per season). Not to mention the contract termination fee, as in the case of coach Ruben Amorim, which was £8.3 million to Sporting CP, as his contract ran until June 2026. Meanwhile, sacking coach ten Hag before the end of his contract would also cost MU between £15 and £17 million in compensation, according to Mail Sport (England).

Manchester United's management has recently implemented drastic cost-cutting measures to restructure the club's finances. They even decided to terminate the ambassadorial contract of former legendary manager Alex Ferguson…

This situation shows that MU needs to resolve many financial issues before they can recruit a new manager. But in the short term, they can place their trust in Nistelrooy, a man with a deep understanding of the club's history, to help the team overcome their difficulties before considering further solutions.
