Former Manchester United legend Michael Carrick has been appointed to the "hot seat" at Man Utd, replacing interim manager Darren Fletcher, who took over the team for two games after Ruben Amorim was sacked.

Previously, the Portuguese manager had faced considerable pressure due to his insistence on using the 3-4-2-1 formation, to the point that Director of Football Jason Wilcox openly questioned him during their final meeting.
With only 17 rounds remaining in the Premier League, manager Carrick emphasized that he will change Manchester United in a flexible and dynamic way, rather than the monotonous approach of the past.
Speaking on MUTV, the former Red Devils player said: “Obviously we want to win. But there are many ways to achieve that, depending on the context, depending on the situation of each game. Sometimes you have to change the way you play. What I enjoy most is working with the players, helping them improve so that the team becomes stronger.”
I'm part of the team; we're here for each other. I understand that results are important, but I want the team to play emotional, positive football and know how to create excitement. I want to feel thrilled and excited watching them play. And of course, good results must come with that.
I can clearly feel my excitement. I want to get started and see what we can achieve.”
Coach Carrick is expected to favor a 4-2-3-1 formation, similar to the one he used as interim manager in 2021, which resulted in two wins in three matches. However, he leaves open the possibility of making changes depending on the personnel and the opponent, especially as his goal is to qualify for the Champions League next season.

After being officially announced as Manchester United's head coach, Carrick shared: “Managing Manchester United is a great honor for me. I understand what it takes to succeed here. My focus right now is on helping the players reach the standards the club sets, which I believe this team is fully capable of achieving.”
I've worked with many players in the team and have followed them over the years. I have absolute faith in their talent, professionalism, and fighting spirit. There's still a lot ahead in the season, and we're ready to unite and deliver performances worthy of our fans' support.”
Carrick is joined by former England assistant coach Steve Holland. His coaching staff also includes Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion. Carrick praised Holland's extensive experience: “I’m delighted to have Steve alongside me. He has fantastic experience, especially from his time at Chelsea. Steve went through a similar situation when the club changed managers several times.”
Holland worked under six different managers in eight years at Stamford Bridge, including three periods of crisis when interim managers were appointed under Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, and Guus Hiddink.
Carrick also praised his other colleagues: “Jonathan brings the perfect balance. He’s always questioning and challenging me. Travis represents the club’s DNA, nurturing young talent and ensuring a connection with the academy.”
"And Jonny is someone I've always respected. He understands United inside and out, understands the culture day by day, and has a wealth of experience to pass on to the players."
Contrary to Coach Amorim's somewhat harsh view, calling the academy's young players' confidence "self-satisfaction," Carrick asserted that he always supported giving opportunities to the next generation. Although Coach Amorim had promoted several young players to the first team, he remained hesitant to use them even when the squad was in crisis due to eight injuries.
Carrick made his position clear: “I’ve always loved working with young players. They have to prove themselves to get a chance, but that’s something I’ve always been passionate about. This club has long been associated with giving opportunities to young talent. That’s also what the fans want to see: freshness, rawness, and desire. I fully support giving them opportunities and supporting them. That should be a core value of Man Utd.”
Coach Carrick will make his debut for Man Utd in the Manchester derby against Man City in the Premier League at 7:30 PM on January 17th.
