Mainoo faced many difficulties under Amorim's rule.

The young English talent signed a new contract with the "Red Devils" until 2031, putting an end to all speculation regarding his future. However, prior to the contract extension, Mainoo went through a period of instability when he was no longer favored by Amorim.

Despite being a key player for MU, the 21-year-old midfielder was surprisingly left out of the plans under the Portuguese manager. Amorim believes Mainoo is only suitable for a position similar to captain Bruno Fernandes, a position that is irreplaceable in the team.

Constantly being sidelined has led Mainoo to consider leaving the club. Speaking to Sky Sports , he admitted: "When you don't get to play much, or not at all, you think about all the possibilities. But in my mind, I always want to continue playing for Manchester United."

Things only changed after Amorim was sacked and Michael Carrick was appointed as interim manager. Under Carrick, Mainoo quickly regained his position and became a crucial link in the midfield. He started 14 Premier League games, after not having made a single start under Amorim.

Mainoo said the period of being out of favor was the biggest challenge since joining the first team: "Going from playing almost every game to not playing at all was a very difficult change. But it helped me learn more about patience, how to train and maintain my mentality."

The strong resurgence also opens up the possibility for Mainoo to be included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
