De Ligt is highly likely to suffer a recurrence of his injury. |
Speaking to the press after the 3-4 defeat to hosts Brentford in the 35th round of the Premier League on May 4th, Amorim expressed concern about the team's squad situation after center-back Matthijs de Ligt limped off the pitch.
“I’m not sure about De Ligt’s situation and I’m very worried, not just because of the Europa League game,” Amorim told Sky Sports . “We took Luke Shaw off at half-time to conserve his energy for the second leg of the semi-final against Athletic Club. Right now, the team’s squad situation is really concerning to me.”
In the match against Brentford, De Ligt returned to the Manchester United starting lineup for the first time after more than a month out with injury, but the Dutch defender only played for 35 minutes before suffering another injury after a collision with Bryan Mbuemo.
Harry Maguire was then brought on to replace De Ligt. Although De Ligt later left the field without crutches, the Red Devils' medical team feared he might not be able to play for the remainder of the season. Besides De Ligt, Maguire and Shaw also had health concerns.
"I'm not sure what Shaw's condition is. We'll wait and see. Hopefully, it's not serious. The coaching staff had to take a risk and bring Maguire on," Amorim added.
