Matic once played for MU. |
Having played for Chelsea and Manchester United, Matic understands the way the two clubs operate and their philosophies very well. In a recent interview with The Athletic , Matic shared the clear difference between his time at Chelsea and Manchester United.
The Serbian midfielder insists that at Chelsea, winning and winning trophies is always the club's top priority, while at Man United he feels that commercial factors take precedence over sporting results.
"The difference I felt clearly after leaving Chelsea was that at Chelsea everything revolved around winning and winning trophies. That spirit was evident throughout the whole club, from the players to the lawnmowers. Everyone understood that winning was the only goal," Matic shared. "At Chelsea, the owner Roman Abramovich was always only interested in results. At Manchester United, I felt that everything was shifting towards commercial factors. After a few months here, I started to notice that."
Matic also did not hesitate to criticize the difference in the level of attention paid to commercial work between MU and Chelsea.
“At Chelsea I was involved in about two commercial jobs, but at Manchester United I had many times that,” he added. “I understand the club needs to secure finances, but I don’t feel like winning is the number one priority like at Chelsea.”

Matic thinks MU only prioritizes commerce. |
During Matic's five seasons at Manchester United, the team has only finished second in the Premier League once (in 2020/21), with two thirds and two sixths. However, the 'Red Devils' have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League during this period.
Although Matic was a consistent and reliable player, he failed to find great success at Old Trafford, partly due to the club's poor fortunes during that period.
It is worth noting that Matic’s tenure coincided with the tenure of CEO Ed Woodward, who was widely criticised by fans for prioritising commercial interests over success on the pitch. It was also during this time that United were heavily criticised for the emergence of the controversial Super League project, a controversial initiative of which Woodward was one of the leaders.
Matic also admitted that although he came to Manchester United with the desire to win titles, over time he began to feel that winning was not a priority.
"When I came to Man United, I had the same anger and desire to win as at Chelsea, but gradually I felt that the title was not the priority of the club," Matic shared. "Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I really felt."
Matic has enjoyed a successful season with Lyon, making 31 appearances for the French side this season and is expected to shine again in the Europa League quarter-final against Manchester United. The first leg will be played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, before the return leg at Old Trafford next week.
This promises to be an emotional confrontation for Matic, as he has the opportunity to face his former team, to whom he has devoted himself for the past 5 years.
