Matic exposes the truth at MU.

Nemanja Matic has been a strong critic of Manchester United, asserting that winning was not the primary objective during his time at Old Trafford.

Matic previously played for Manchester United.

Having played for both Chelsea and Manchester United, Matic understands the workings and philosophies of both clubs very well. Recently, in an interview with The Athletic , Matic shared the clear differences between his time at Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Serbian midfielder asserted that at Chelsea, winning and securing titles were always the club's top priority, while at Man United, he felt that commercial factors took precedence over sporting results.

"The most noticeable difference I felt after leaving Chelsea was that at Chelsea, everything revolved around winning and trophies. That spirit was evident throughout the entire club, from the players to the lawnmowers. Everyone understood that winning was the only goal," Matic shared. "At Chelsea, Chairman Roman Abramovich was always only interested in results. At Manchester United, I felt that everything shifted towards the commercial aspect. After a few months there, I started to notice that."

Matic also didn't hesitate to criticize the difference in the level of focus on commercial activities between MU and Chelsea.

"At Chelsea, I was involved in about two commercial jobs, but at Manchester United, the number of such jobs was many times greater," he added. "I understand that the club needs to secure its finances, but I didn't feel that winning was the number one priority like it was at Chelsea."

Matic believes that MU only prioritizes commercial aspects.

During Matic's five seasons at Manchester United, the team finished only second in the Premier League once (2020/21 season), along with third and sixth places twice. However, the Red Devils never progressed beyond the Champions League quarter-finals during this period.

Although Matic was a consistent and reliable player, he couldn't find great success at Old Trafford, partly due to the club's less-than-stellar situation at the time.

It's noteworthy that Matic's tenure coincided with the leadership of CEO Ed Woodward, who faced significant criticism from fans for prioritizing commercial interests over on-field success. This period also saw strong criticism of Manchester United's Super League project, a controversial initiative in which Woodward was a key figure.

Matic also admitted that although he arrived at Manchester United with a desire to win trophies, over time he began to feel that winning was not the priority.

"When I arrived at Man United, I carried the same anger and hunger for victory as I did at Chelsea, but gradually I realized that winning trophies wasn't the club's priority," Matic shared. "Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I truly felt."

Currently, Matic is having a successful season with Lyon, making 31 appearances for the French club this season and is expected to continue his impressive form in the Europa League quarter-final against Manchester United. The first leg will take place at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, before the second leg at Old Trafford next week.

This promises to be an emotional encounter for Matic, as he gets the chance to face his former team, where he spent the past five years.
