Kylian Mbappe alone is not enough for Real Madrid. |
Before the derby, the atmosphere at the Bernabeu was filled with confidence. Los Blancos had won La Liga, had a smooth start to the Champions League, and fans were starting to believe in a new era of dominance. But the bitter misstep at the Metropolitano was a wake-up call: beneath the glittering facade, Real Madrid still had cracks that were hard to hide.
Xabi Alonso brought freshness: intense pressing, fast-paced attacks, a desire to impose their style of play. But the more Real Madrid won, the more they exposed the truth that they were living off the legs and killer instinct of one man - Mbappe.
Mbappe - the extraordinary goal scoring machine
The numbers speak for themselves. After eight official matches this season, Real Madrid have scored 18 goals, with Mbappe contributing 10. Only against Mallorca has he failed to score. In La Liga, eight goals have come from 24 shots, meaning he has scored one goal every three games – an almost absurd performance in the world’s toughest environment.
The point is that behind Mbappe, the support is too modest. Besides him, only four other players scored: Güler, Militão, Vinícius and Mastantuono. A statistic that makes fans startled when remembering that this is Real Madrid - a team that once boasted many shining strikers.
Mbappe is lonely at Real Madrid. |
Against Atletico, Mbappe still left his mark with a goal. But Real Madrid lost heavily. That shows the problem lies in the collective. The midfield cannot control the game: Tchouameni is unstable, and Valverde has to carry too much on the wings. When the ball does not reach the striker's feet, even Mbappe becomes isolated.
The defence was again exposed. Spaces were exploited, leaving all the attacking efforts in vain. The bench, despite its quality, was no solution. Xabi Alonso tried to change things, but his changes only made Real Madrid more stuck.
Black and white paradox
Mbappe was expected to be the perfect piece to revive a new “galaxy”. He responded with devastating form, becoming the highlight of every match. However, the paradox is: the more Mbappe is there, the more Real depends on him.
A big team cannot put its fate on a star, even if it is Mbappe. Barcelona fell into that tragedy during Messi's time: Leo scored continuously, but the lack of sharing made Barca easily collapse when facing tough opponents. Real Madrid today is repeating that spiral.
Xabi Alonso knows the problem. He needs a more diverse Real Madrid, one where Vinicius can be explosive again, Güler dares to take on a creative role, and the midfield is strong enough to control the tempo. To do that, Alonso must be bold enough to rotate, trust young talent, and tighten up defensive discipline.
With Mbappe, Real have a super weapon. But to compete in La Liga and the Champions League, they need an entire ecosystem around him, not just rely on moments of genius from the number 10.
The derby was not only a failure, but also a wake-up call. Real Madrid have one of the best strikers on the planet, but they do not have a strong enough team to elevate him. Mbappe is still scoring, still shining, but he is alone. And if Alonso does not find a solution soon, Real's seemingly perfect season could collapse on the shoulders of one individual.
