On the morning of April 3rd (Vietnam time), Inter Miami faced a tough challenge at LAFC's home stadium in the first leg of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-finals.
Despite having superstar Lionel Messi on the team, Inter Miami from the MLS suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat against the home side, who displayed discipline and composure.
From the opening whistle, the pace of the game quickened but lacked sharp attacking moves. Nevertheless, the determination of both teams created fierce battles in the midfield area.
Messi and his teammates face a tough challenge against LAFC.
In the 22nd minute, a controversial incident occurred when Ordaz of LAFC committed a foul on Inter Miami's center-back Allen. VAR intervened, but only a yellow card was shown to the LAFC forward, causing frustration among the visiting team's players.
In the 37th minute, Messi had a chance to open the scoring from a free-kick – a situation that is his forte. However, the Argentine superstar's shot lacked the necessary sharpness and failed to beat veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris of LAFC, resulting in a goalless first half.
In the second half, LAFC increased the pressure and had a dangerous counter-attack in the 48th minute, forcing goalkeeper Ustari to rush out of the penalty area to avert the danger.
However, the real turning point came in the 57th minute when Ordaz took a shot from outside the penalty area. Although not powerful, goalkeeper Ustari made a misjudgment, allowing LAFC to take a 1-0 lead in a regrettable moment.
Veteran striker Suarez was unable to help Miami's attack score a goal.
Not stopping there, LAFC nearly scored a second goal in the 64th minute when Tillman unleashed a shot inside the box, but fortunately for Inter Miami, center-back Allen managed to retreat and clear the ball off the line. LAFC continued to press, and Tillman had another chance in the 76th minute, but his shot lacked power and went wide of the target.
LAFC secured a 1-0 victory, giving them a significant advantage going into the second leg at Inter Miami's home stadium. To overturn the deficit and secure a place in the semi-finals, coach Gerardo Martino's team will have to put in much more effort in the upcoming match.
Inter Miami and LAFC will face each other again on March 10th, before which Messi and his teammates will host Toronto in an MLS match on March 7th.
