Meta has repeatedly delayed making its new AI tool, Muse Spark, available to developers, raising questions about its ability to recoup its large investments in artificial intelligence anytime soon.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta Platforms has delayed the release of its Muse Spark access tool for nearly two months. As of June 2nd, the company had not set a specific launch date, according to people familiar with the matter.
This tool is an API, or Application Programming Interface, which allows software to connect to and utilize Meta's AI technology. Simply put, instead of building an AI model from scratch, developers can use the API to integrate Meta's AI into their own applications, websites, or tools.
Meta initially planned to open the API around the time of Muse Spark's launch in April. Two days later, Meta's AI Director, Alexandr Wang, wrote on social media platform X that Muse Spark's API would be released soon. However, the plan was later postponed from April to May due to testing errors and the need for additional infrastructure. The release was then further delayed to June.

A Meta spokesperson said the company is testing the API with partners and expects to release it this month. The spokesperson said Meta understands developers are waiting for this tool and the company wants to get the product to them as soon as possible.
The delayed API launch could impact Muse Spark's commercial viability. For AI models that aren't publicly available for download, APIs are the primary way for developers to access and utilize them. OpenAI and Anthropic currently monetize in part by selling API access to customers.
Meta plans to spend up to $145 billion this year, largely on expanding its AI infrastructure. The company aims to develop personal and business AI assistants for its approximately 3.5 billion daily active users across its platforms.
Muse Spark is Meta's first AI model to be released without sharing its entire design and underlying software files. According to Meta's internal assessment, this model is competitive with products from OpenAI and Anthropic. However, most developers have yet to directly use Muse Spark.
