Self-driving computers are becoming the new direction that Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and many other major tech companies are betting on, after years of virtual assistants like Alexa or Siri being primarily used for simple tasks such as setting alarms or playing music.
According to CNN, technology companies have recently introduced a range of new chips, laptops, and software to support AI agents. These are artificial intelligence assistants that can understand requests, break down tasks, and perform multiple steps on behalf of the user, rather than simply responding to individual commands.
Bob O'Donnell, founder of the research firm Technalysis, argues that the ultimate goal is for users to simply tell the computer what they want, and then the device handles the rest.
On June 1st, Nvidia introduced the RTX Spark chip for Windows laptops, designed to run AI agents without needing a cloud connection. Dell, HP, and Lenovo are expected to launch computers using the new chip in the fall of 2026.
Google is also developing Googlebooks, a line of computers that can suggest actions when users hover their mouse over content on the screen. For example, the device could suggest scheduling a meeting when users hover over a date in an email.
For years, tech companies have sought to build digital assistants to handle familiar tasks like creating shopping carts, tracking online orders, or planning trips . However, previous assistants were often only capable of performing individual tasks, lacking the ability to handle complex workflows or understand personal preferences. This began to change after large language models became widespread from late 2022.

This week, Nvidia showcased a laptop using a new chip that can assist in home design by having an AI agent coordinate between 3D modeling applications. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced Scout, a new assistant for Microsoft 365, that can work with data across the cloud, PCs, the web, and applications such as Outlook and Teams.
However, experts believe that most users are not yet able to control a computer with just a few commands in a short period of time. One reason is that new computers can be expensive, while the needs of the average user are not yet large enough to warrant purchasing a new device.
Besides cost, trust is also a major barrier. If an AI agent is tasked with buying concert tickets, the system could misinterpret the budget and select seats that are too expensive. According to experts, this technology is on the right track, but it still needs more time before it becomes a widespread product.
