Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced it will remove messages that refer to Jewish people as "Zionists" and are hateful in nature.
According to CNN, Meta stated, “We determined that current policy guidelines do not adequately address how people are using the term ‘Zionist’ online and offline.”
The latest adjustment expands Meta's approach, considering a message as hateful when it is accompanied by anti-Semitic imagery or explicitly mentions Jewish people.
Meta said it met with more than 145 historians, civil rights groups, legal and human rights experts, and free speech advocates around the world to arrive at this decision.
Earlier this month, Meta also stated that it is adjusting its rules regarding hateful messages, considering whether the use of the Arabic word “shaheed,” often translated as “martyrdom,” constitutes hate speech.
