
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presided over the signing ceremony of the new Global Modernization Agreement, witnessed by European Council President Antonio Costa. The agreement aims to update and expand political and economic relations between Mexico and the EU after more than 25 years of implementing the original agreement between the two sides.
In the field of trade, the Mexican Minister of Economy and the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security signed a Provisional Trade Agreement, aimed at boosting trade and strengthening economic ties between the two sides. These documents were signed following a bilateral summit, in which both sides agreed to enhance cooperation on trade, security, migration, energy transition, digitalization, and international policy coordination.
Mexico-EU relations are being strengthened amid rising global trade uncertainties. For Mexico, strengthening ties with Europe is seen as a way to diversify markets and reduce risks from unilateral decisions from Washington.
According to statistics, in 2025, the EU will be Mexico's third largest trading partner, after the United States and China.
