Northern Vietnam experiences hot weather - VnExpress

VnExpressVnExpress16/06/2023

Starting today, the northern region will experience widespread heatwave conditions with daily maximum temperatures commonly reaching 35-37 degrees Celsius, forecast to last for approximately 5 days.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, at 1 PM today, Hanoi and six northern provinces experienced temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius. In Hanoi, except for the Ha Dong meteorological station, the four stations in Ba Vi, Son Tay, Hoai Duc, and Lang all recorded hot weather. This is due to the re-development of a hot low-pressure area in the west, ending a series of rainy days with maximum temperatures below 34 degrees Celsius that had lasted for more than a week.

Forecasts indicate that from tomorrow, the heatwave will spread across the entire northern region and last until June 21st, with maximum temperatures reaching 35-37 degrees Celsius, and even exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in some areas. In the late afternoon and evening, some areas may experience thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

The US Accuweather website forecasts that from today until next Monday, Hanoi will experience temperatures of 27-37 degrees Celsius, after which the highest temperature will drop to 33-35 degrees Celsius. High-altitude areas above 1,500 meters above sea level, such as Sa Pa ( Lao Cai ), will have temperatures of 19-16 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

Central Vietnam has experienced continuous hot weather with temperatures of 35-37 degrees Celsius since June 10th. From tomorrow, as the hot low-pressure system in the west intensifies, temperatures will rise even higher, to 36-38 degrees, and over 39 degrees Celsius in the western mountainous areas. The hottest hours will be from 11 am to 6 pm.

Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands are affected by a stable southwest monsoon, resulting in showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening in the coming days. The highest daytime temperatures in the Central Highlands will be 31 degrees Celsius, and in Southern Vietnam 34 degrees Celsius.

Meteorological agencies warn that intense heat combined with low humidity could lead to fire hazards in residential areas due to increased electricity demand and the risk of forest fires. In addition, the heat can cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

From April to the first half of June, the country experienced seven widespread heatwaves. Among them, the heatwaves from April 17-24, May 4-7, and June 1-4 saw numerous temperature records. Increased electricity demand, coupled with depleted hydropower reservoirs and malfunctions at some thermal power plants, led to power shortages in the North, with many areas experiencing rolling power cuts.
