Northern Vietnam experiences intense cold, with temperatures dropping to just 5 degrees Celsius at the summit of Mau Son mountain.

(NLDO) - The cold air mass has plunged the North into severe cold weather. Temperatures at Mau Son peak dropped to just 5 degrees Celsius; Dong Van (Ha Giang) was below 8 degrees Celsius.

A strong cold front is intensifying, causing severe cold weather in the North.

Due to the influence of a strong cold front, this morning (December 8th), Hanoi experienced no rain but strong northeasterly winds. Two meteorological stations in the suburbs, Son Tay and Ba Vi, recorded temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius, while meteorological stations in Hoai Duc and Ha Dong recorded temperatures above 16 degrees Celsius.

At the summit of Mau Son mountain (Lang Son province), 1,600 meters above sea level, the temperature dropped to only 5 degrees Celsius; Dong Van (Ha Giang) was over 8 degrees Celsius; Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc) and Trung Khanh ( Cao Bang ) were 9 degrees Celsius.

Overall, today in the Northern region, it will be cold, with some mountainous areas experiencing severe cold; the lowest temperatures during this cold spell will generally range from 14-17 degrees Celsius, 11-13 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas, and below 10 degrees Celsius in some high mountainous areas. The North Central region will also be cold; the lowest temperatures during this cold spell will generally range from 15-18 degrees Celsius. Hanoi will also be cold. The lowest temperatures during this cold spell will generally range from 14-17 degrees Celsius.

Due to the influence of a cold front, the area from Ha Tinh to Phu Yen will experience rain, showers, and locally heavy rain and thunderstorms. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting stated that the North will continue to be deeply affected by cold air until December 10-12, after which temperatures will gradually rise. By December 12, a new cold front will intensify, bringing temperatures down even further.

This is the fifth cold spell of this winter. Forecasts indicate that cold spells will increase in frequency and intensity in December, with severe cold spells and frost likely to occur in the latter half of the month.

Weather in various regions across the country

The northwestern region of Vietnam will be cloudy today with scattered rain. Light winds. Cold weather. The lowest temperature will be 14-17 degrees Celsius, with some areas below 14 degrees. The highest temperature will be 18-21 degrees Celsius, with some areas above 22 degrees.

The northeastern region of Vietnam will be cloudy today with scattered rain. Northeast winds will be strong, reaching level 3, and level 4-5 along the coast. It will be cold. The lowest temperature will be 15-18 degrees Celsius, 12-14 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas, and below 10 degrees Celsius in some high mountainous areas. The highest temperature will be 18-21 degrees Celsius.

The area from Thanh Hoa to Nghe An will be cloudy today with scattered light rain. It will be cold with the lowest temperatures ranging from 16-19 degrees Celsius, and 19-22 degrees Celsius in the south. The highest temperatures will be 20-23 degrees Celsius.

The area from Ha Tinh to Hue will be cloudy today with scattered rain and showers, locally heavy rain and thunderstorms. North to northwest winds will be at level 2-3, level 4-5 in coastal areas. There is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms. The lowest temperature will be 19-22 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 24-26 degrees Celsius.

The area from Da Nang to Binh Thuan will be cloudy today with scattered rain and showers, locally heavy rain and thunderstorms. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature will be 22-25 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 24-27 degrees Celsius in the North and 27-30 degrees Celsius in the South, with some areas exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.

The Central Highlands will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3. The lowest temperature will be 18-21 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 26-29 degrees Celsius.

Southern Vietnam will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms today. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3. The lowest temperature will be 23-26 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature will be 30-33 degrees Celsius.

This weather pattern is forecast to persist for several more days in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.
