Artist Le Viet Trung (born 1982), a lecturer in the Fine Arts Department, shared: “I loved drawing from a young age because I had a cousin who drew very well. My father sent me to art classes, and I participated in drawing competitions at various art schools at children's centers, and I've been involved with fine arts ever since.” Painting seemed like a "destiny" for Trung, but it was actually due to his living environment. Therefore, when he chose Hue to develop his art, he matured quickly. During his master's studies in Visual Arts at Mahsarakham University in Thailand, he explored and experimented with different materials on traditional silk, such as pencils, dyes, and ink… experimenting with separating silk paintings into multiple layers, allowing light to penetrate through the layers of images and rolled-up fabric pieces, making the silk more vibrant. From these experiments, he created many works with a unique style.
“There were many failed works, but that was the path to successful ones. These experiments stimulated my interest and creativity, shaping the Viet Trung of today,” Trung said. With his silk artworks, Trung has won numerous awards, such as the 2010 Outstanding Artwork Award – Thua Thien Hue Union of Literature and Arts Associations (for the work “Son 01”); and the calligraphy on silk artwork “Friend” which won the Encouragement Award at the 2014 Young Artists Festival…
Winning a propaganda poster competition on mine prevention in Quang Tri province was a memorable first experience for Phan Le Chung (a lecturer at Hue University of Arts), marking the beginning of his "love affair" with fine arts. Subsequent exchanges between Hue, Hanoi , and Ho Chi Minh City during art gatherings in the ancient capital city unknowingly transformed Phan Le Chung into a painter. Passionate and eager to learn, he constantly sought new directions. In his community art project "The Story of the River," artist Phan Le Chung used photo-voice art to tell the hidden stories within the Perfume River through photographs taken by boat dwellers, students, and young photographers in Hue.
“I chose photography as my medium because it captures direct, topical images. I shared basic knowledge, mostly on how to use photographic equipment, with a group of students at Van Quat Dong Primary School, a group of boat dwellers, and groups like artists and students who already had some photography knowledge. Then, I asked these people to take pictures of the Perfume River,” Chung shared. The “harmonious combination” of images and sound resulted in highly creative products, culminating in an exhibition that attracted a large audience.
Artist Phan Le Chung commented: “Young artists in Hue are very dynamic and creative in searching for new materials in their creative experiments. They not only explore techniques and materials on canvas but also experiment with many contemporary art forms such as installation, performance, and video art…” Chung's observation is understandable given the strong academic environment in Hue. Many generations of artists have chosen Hue for its poetic and romantic atmosphere, and the slow pace of life there, though slow, is one of profound depth and serenity.
Not only artists like Viet Trung or Le Chung, but many other young artists from the ancient capital have already achieved success in their artistic journeys. Their works are unique and diverse, incorporating new forms and materials such as installation art, sculptural photography, video art, bamboo paper graphics, printmaking, paperblocks, and welded iron mica… Young artists in Hue are constantly researching, exploring, and experimenting with various genres, bringing fresh perspectives and insightful viewpoints from multiple angles.
According to statistics compiled by artist Le Ba Cang, Vice President of the Hue City Fine Arts Association, some notable solo exhibitions showcasing artistic innovation include "Sympathy" (2013) by artist Dang Thu An; "Reflection" (2015) by artist Nguyen Phuc Quy; "Whispers" (2016) by artist Phan Le Chung; "The Scars" (2012), and "Day After Day" (2015) by artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai… Artist Cang believes that each exhibition bears the personal imprint of an effort to explore novelty, representing invaluable artistic values.
