Many people think that simply cutting back on sweets and sugary drinks is enough to lower blood sugar levels. However, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, who works in the US, says that controlling blood sugar isn't just about avoiding sweets. There are some surprising foods that can cause a dramatic spike in blood sugar, according to the health news site Best Life.
Here are five everyday foods that doctors point out can raise your blood sugar levels without you knowing.

Bread
According to Dr. Dasgupta, white bread can make cells less sensitive to insulin, increasing the risk of insulin resistance over time, and also increasing the risk of blood sugar spikes.
He explained: Although it doesn't taste sweet, white bread, made from refined flour (with the bran and germ containing fiber removed), quickly breaks down into sugar during digestion. This rapid absorption can cause a spike in blood sugar.
Low-fat flavored yogurt
This type of yogurt often contains sugar which can cause a spike in insulin levels.
Low-fat yogurt is generally known to be healthy, but flavored varieties often contain hidden sugars, notes Dr. Maria Teresa Anton, an endocrinologist at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, USA. This added sugar, combined with the low fat content of the food, causes blood sugar levels to spike more quickly.
It's best to choose low-fat, unsweetened yogurt, as it's high in protein and low in carbohydrates, which helps control blood sugar.

Dried fruit can raise blood sugar levels.
Fruits are commonly known to be high in fiber and have a low glycemic index. However, unlike fresh fruit, dried fruit can raise blood sugar levels. Just a handful of dried fruit can provide the same or more sugar content as a candy bar.
Because dried fruit contains no water, the sugar content is much more concentrated, which can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, explains Dr. Dasgupta, according to Best Life.
Potato
In general, vegetables are very good for blood sugar. However, starchy vegetables can raise blood sugar levels much faster because they are rich in carbohydrates, which break down into glucose.
Dr. Daniel Atkinson, who works in the UK, says that potatoes can cause a spike in blood sugar. Conversely, although they may seem sweeter, sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index than potatoes, making them better for people monitoring their blood sugar levels.
Fried food
Dr. Dasgupta warns that while fried foods may not contain sugar, they are often coated in batter or starches that act like simple carbohydrates in the body.
Additionally, deep-frying adds unhealthy fats, which can contribute to insulin resistance if consumed regularly. The combination of high carbohydrate and fat content can lead to an overreaction to insulin afterward.
