The last class before the Lunar New Year 2024 in the evening class.
The last class of the old year was very special for the students in the evening classes. In the hallways and classrooms of Hong Duc Primary School, Ward 14, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, the teachers decorated the school with apricot and peach blossoms and vibrant red couplets. It was beautiful!
The students in the literacy class – held three evenings a week – had their lesson in a large classroom today, and the session ended with warm wishes from their teachers.
This school year, there are 21 students in the evening literacy class at Hong Duc Primary School, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City. These 21 students come from 21 different difficult circumstances: some are orphans living with their grandparents; others sell lottery tickets or work at noodle shops while attending school in the evenings. A few were absent from the end-of-year class because they had to help their parents with extra work during the Tet holiday. But everyone is eager to learn. Everyone looks forward to going to school to meet their teachers and learn to read and write.
Even after class ended, many students still felt reluctant to leave. Hearing the teachers' New Year greetings, everyone felt a sense of excitement. Everyone felt a little giddy sitting in class, realizing that Tet (Vietnamese New Year) was just around the corner.
The students in the evening class received Tet gifts and took Tet photos with their teachers.
Ms. Phung Le Dieu Hanh, Principal of Hong Duc Primary School, presented each student in the evening class with a Tet gift bag containing milk, cakes, and candies, along with words of encouragement for them to be well-behaved, study hard, and stay healthy so they can continue attending class after Tet. The Tet gifts were donated by benefactors, and the school also contributed to buy cakes and milk to encourage the students in the evening class.
Ms. Ton Thi Ngoc Huyen, a teacher of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students in the literacy class, advised her students to have a happy Tet holiday, to try to help their grandparents and parents, and promised to see them again in the first lessons of the new year.
Receiving the Lunar New Year gifts, the students in the evening class couldn't hide their joy. "Thank you, teacher. I'll take the gifts home for my younger siblings. I have a few more at home," said a small, dark-skinned boy with bright eyes, visibly moved.
Hứa Đăng Thông, a 20-year-old student who works during the day and studies in the evenings, currently in first grade at a primary school, received a Lunar New Year gift bag from the principal with both hands. "Thank you, teacher," Thông said.
Ms. Phung Le Dieu Hanh said that every school year, the teachers and benefactors at the school send gifts to the students in the night class – children from many unfortunate circumstances who constantly strive in their studies and in life. Books and school supplies are always readily available for the students in the night class. Not only during the Lunar New Year, but also on occasions such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Children's Day, and at the end of the school year, the school always sends gifts to the students.
Also during the Lunar New Year 2024, Hong Duc Primary School organized a spring festival, bringing a meaningful traditional Tet atmosphere to all students. During the festival, philanthropists and parents donated funds and presented over 130 Tet gift bags (each containing rice, cooking oil, milk, cakes, and candy) to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, 33 health insurance policies were donated by benefactors to 33 students from impoverished families who had not yet been able to purchase health insurance.
Spring is the season of hope, the season of love. Spring gifts sent to students at this time, like vibrant apricot and peach blossoms, add more meaning to the tapestry of life...
