Following the "Ancient Souls, Strange Harbors" reunion , which showcased over 50 works by the first four members of the Indochina Fine Arts School and was auctioned by the prestigious Sotheby's in Ho Chi Minh City, this is the first time that works by professors from the Indochina Fine Arts School and artists who traveled from France to Indochina have come together in the "Dream of the Far East" gathering.
This new exhibition showcases paintings that explore the themes of French artists who traveled to and lived in Indochina in the past, and how they constructed their own perspectives to view the land and people of this region.
On the morning of August 18th, in an interview with Thanh Niên Online , art critic Ngô Kim Khôi stated: "Through two non-commercial exhibitions at Sotheby's, ' Dream of the Far East ' will be a major boost for the market and will revitalize the Vietnamese art market, reaching both the international and domestic markets."
An extremely impressive art space.
According to art critic Ngo Kim Khoi: "Previously, having interacted with 3-4 major auction houses, I felt they were still hesitant about the Vietnamese market for various reasons. However, witnessing Sotheby's accepting to spend a considerable amount of money on grand exhibitions of Indochinese paintings like this, I believe those concerns will soon change. The price of Vietnamese paintings on the market will be higher, and importantly, many more exhibitions like this will continue. The public will be the beneficiaries. It's not easy to find priceless works from the past like these right here in Ho Chi Minh City, for students to freely explore and art lovers to admire to their heart's content. Many images in the paintings are now lost heritage, and without 'Dream of the Far East, ' where would we find them?"
Attracting a large audience
Visitors to the "Dream of the Far East" exhibition are truly overwhelmed by the grandeur of the art space.
In particular, Jean-Louis Paguenaud's painting La Baie d'Along (Ha Long Bay) was known to be one of the biggest challenges for the exhibition organizers. The painting measures 212 x 513 cm and initially weighs 160 kg. Within a tight timeframe, the organizers did everything possible to safely transport this "masterpiece" by road (over 3 days) from North to South Vietnam in time for its presentation to the public.
