In recent years, picture books by Vietnamese authors have flourished, receiving much attention from readers both domestically and internationally, and are enthusiastically received by parents and children alike. Many books published by Kim Dong Publishing House have been reprinted multiple times over the years, their publishing rights have been sold to many countries around the world , and they have attracted attention at numerous international book fairs. As a result, Vietnamese picture book authors have more motivation to continue creating, and their works are becoming increasingly refined.
The series of books themed "A Friendship," launched consecutively since the beginning of October this year, offers young Vietnamese readers simple yet profound picture books with beautifully crafted illustrations.
Since its release and introduction at the Frankfurt International Book Fair, the two books "We Are Friends" (Vietnamese) and "We Are Friends" (English) by authors Thanh Tam, Phuong Vu, and Hoai Anh, in collaboration with translator Ngo Ha Thu and illustrator Cam Anh Ng, have received much attention. The book tells the story of a journey exploring the warm and joyful world of friendship, skillfully expressed through unique words arranged alphabetically. Each page reveals a sacred memory of friendship. The book's refined prose is further enhanced by the vibrant and poetic illustrations by Cam Anh Ng.
"A Poem for You Every Month" is a miniature portrayal of friendship, encapsulated within the space of an old apartment building, encompassing all four seasons of love. Warm stories of friendship are told in rhythm with time, each month a gentle poem, like an endless journey of friendship and sharing. The pages open to a refreshing blue sky, with plants, birds, sunshine, and wind, and friendship grows stronger with each passing year. The paintings by artist Ngo Thanh Duc also transition from vibrant green to deep reddish-brown, emphasizing the continuous cycle of time and friendship.
"My Hanoi" is a bilingual Vietnamese-English book by Phuong Vu, a person born and raised in Hanoi who loves every alleyway and every little detail of the capital. The book begins in a small room in an old-style apartment building, following two young friends on their journey of friendship. Readers will visit familiar landmarks in the Old Quarter, admire a colorful Hanoi, browse street vendors, and breathe in the scent of flowers, leaves, and the aroma of traditional Vietnamese soup... Because Hanoi has become a place that holds sweet memories of friendship – a familiar city, a cherished friendship, and a sky full of fond memories. With simple drawings and a use of vibrant colors, the image of Hanoi through Thao Vo's illustrations appears both familiar and new, lovely and innocent, with many lines, shades, and scents.
To introduce the "A Friendship" book series to a wider audience, Kim Dong Publishing House, in collaboration with ICBC, is organizing a book launch week from December 20th, 2025 to December 28th, 2025. The event includes ongoing exhibitions, reading sessions, and workshops with the authors, bringing the works closer to young Vietnamese readers.
