Martinez's absence from MU over the past two months has been a regrettable loss. |
Manchester United received positive news ahead of their April 14th match against Leeds United as Lisandro Martinez has recovered from a calf injury. The Argentinian defender, who had been sidelined since early February, recently completed a training camp in Ireland without any problems.
However, manager Michael Carrick has not yet confirmed whether Martinez will be used against Leeds. With Harry Maguire suspended after receiving a red card against Bournemouth, Martinez is a logical replacement. However, the coaching staff does not want to put the 28-year-old at risk while he is still recovering from injury.
"He's back in training, which is a good sign. But we have to make the right decision and make sure he's really ready," Carrick shared. He emphasized that the team wouldn't rush things, as the remaining goals for the season aren't just limited to the match against Leeds.
In case Martinez isn't at his best, Carrick still has the option of Ayden Heaven partnering with Leny Yoro in the center of the defense. This is considered a safe choice when MU needs familiarity and rhythm.
Another case is Matthijs De Ligt, who is still unavailable. The Dutch defender has been sidelined for over four and a half months due to a back injury and did not participate in the team's training camp. He is currently only training in the gym and performing individual rehabilitation exercises.
As for Maguire, his recent red card gives him extra time to recover as he has just returned from international duty with England. The England defender also recently signed a new contract with MU until 2027, with an option to extend for another year.
With a depleted defense, MU is forced to think carefully. Martinez's return is good news, but the final decision still depends on his fitness and the long-term plans of the coaching staff.
