Manchester United risks having to seek new investors, as the club's financial structure comes under increasing pressure from both of its key shareholder groups.

According to financial expert Stefan Borson, the difficult situation at INEOS has led Sir Jim Ratcliffe to face a serious debt crisis. The petrochemical group is burdened with £18 billion in debt, forcing the British billionaire to prioritize and allocate resources to stabilizing his business operations. This will limit Ratcliffe's ability to continue investing heavily in Manchester United.

This puts Manchester United in a cash flow predicament. Since INEOS took ownership, the majority of the club's funding has come from Ratcliffe, particularly the £240 million investment at the beginning of 2025. Conversely, the Glazer family – who currently hold 48.9% of the shares – have long maintained a stance of not using personal funds to finance the team, even as the debt burden continues to grow.

British media reports suggest that with both financial pillars unwilling or unable to continue injecting capital, MU is forced to seek a third partner to share investment responsibilities, or even replace one of the two current shareholder groups.

The need has become urgent as the Old Trafford club plans to renovate its infrastructure and maintain competitive spending on personnel. The club's debt has reached a record high of around £1.29 billion, while last season's revenue of £666.5 million was still insufficient to finance major projects.

Without additional funding from the new owner, MU may have to adjust its strategy towards tighter spending, thus going against its ambition to return to the top.
